the only context in which people take him "seriously" on this site is out of petty kneejerk when his opinions tread on the toes of some usually mediocre nasal vox'd trendmetal jank, at which point "seriously" entails regurgitating hairline jokes, stretching for his takes [ie ratings] on other related artists, and slagging off max. two misrepresentative generalisations from his actual review 
like, i have my own issues with his format and style, but can we not pretend sputnik's tetchy overreactions are any less ridiculous than the youtube strawmen who treat his every word as gospel? *maybe* the Discourse would be more harmonious if it revolved around the substance of his arguments instead of propagating the omnipresent hyperopinionated memery that more accurately represent what i believe most people actually hate about him

I think its dumb, but a lot of people seem to feel validated when he gives albums they enjoy a high score, and on the other hand avoid albums he gives a low score. He has more influence than some are willing to admit, its not just the fact he's a meme



And yeah Sputters can be just as pretentious lol. Music is best experienced when you dive in without any knowledge on the general consensus. Form your own opinions not based off what other people think of the album.

It doesn't piss me off, but there's definitely a clear genre bias being exhibited. Which, granted, is something we all have to an extent, but it's always funny when Melon constantly shits on prog rock and prog metal and then tries to backpedal with a list or review where he's like "see? I DO like prog music!" and it seems disingenuous.



With that said, he's pulled out some unexpected takes on occasion. I remember being surprised when he gave Terminal Redux an 8/10... everyone was pissed in the comments that he didn't give it a 9 or a 10, but I was thinking "hey, at least he actually scored it THIS high"! lol

i'd be more sympathetic to that argument if he was depriving talented acts of opportunities they more urgently need, but i've yet to see a single negative fantano review for a group that doesn't already have an established fanbase, a profitable platform, and a healthy sum of attention from umpteen other sources. it's kinda hard to give a shit that some of his audience might form an overall negative opinion over bands like deftones, deafheaven and btbam when literally the entirety of music nerddom is tuned into them regardless. 
as has been alluded to itt, i don't even think that applies here. his review for this album clearly comes from a place of affection for the band, and i find it much more probable that anyone who actually engaged with it with no previous experience with them would come away feeling encouraged to dip into their older work than to extrapolate that single numerical digit into a straight writeoff. so *maybe* your issue and the issue with people supposedly overly negatively "influenced" by fantano is ultimately the same thing, i.e. that you both set too much stock in other people's opinions while at the same time underplaying the specifics of what they say (which in this case ain't exactly on the deep end of discourse) and focusing on ratings figures in a way that, unsurprisingly, is deeply unproductive outside of context (whether that's the rest of his revs for the fantano pitchfork squad or personal exp with the album in question for the freshly baptised fuck-this-band people who perhaps exist maybe)
if you wanna have a wider discussion about the way some folks, esp on youtube, favour criticism/reaction content above the actual source content, that's fair game - but the implication that this is an issue with fantano's content in-and-of-itself or his platform specifically scans as rly cheap to me
