That drum production is definitely... different to their classic albums, but that's not a good thing.

Band should've folded after Arche.
They just feel like they're regressing in sound for the first time in years.

imagine how fucking stunning it would have been to call it after arche. even if they did that and came back in 5-10 years with more fuel in the tank. this is literally beating a dead horse at this point.

The riffs are just generic nu-metal sounding ones and it's that sorta synthetic kinda heavy that I can't stand.
Just feel forced at this point, I'd take the lesser tracks off Marrow over most of this new stuff...honestly.

@BigPleb It's on about the same level I think. Bad riffs all around, but Marrow has worse lyrics and the new material has worse production. Definitely not very interested in hearing any new albums.
@DrGonzo A Dillinger-style exit after Arche would have been the best and I wanted them to do that at the time. As is they'll just do a Metallica and release a series of bad to boring albums until they retire. Hopefully they can at least keep decent live performances like Metallica and not just turn to absolute shite like In Flames.

The new song is a definite improvement, but no cigar. Not on the level of their previous mega epics. It's gonna take a live production job with monster guitar tone like Mode Gauze and a solid Kyo vocal to make this song amazing.

DEG and production are not getting on well so don't count on it.

New single is great, really enjoying it after about 3 listens. Better than everything on this record for sure.

listened to it a few times now, and it's just so damn recycled. plus, for the size of the thing, there's not a moment in it that brings the wow factor a track like "Diabolos" or "Vinushka" brings. guitar riffs are still really generic too imo

Bad or non-existent riffs were one of the biggest problems with TIW aside from the production. There's no excuse for lazy chugs. Never liked Obscure for the same reason. Use some actual riffs in that and you might get somewhere. Nu metal is musical cancer and it unfortunately metastasised over a lot of DEG's career. Weird for a FNM fan to be saying things like that but there are light years between Jim Martin riffs and TIW. Hell, even SOAD riffs are better.
Makes me appreciate just how special Vinushka is. Uroboros album in general has a lot of solid riffs; Red Soil, Stuck Man, Toguro, Gaika, Dozing Green...Shame that their inspiration is gone.

i feel DSS had a perfect amount of chug. but yeah, it's been tasteless recently

DSS has a mix of chugs and riffs, with a lot of atmospheric sections. It's probably the chuggiest album I like along with Meshuggah. Nu metal shite is on a whole other level of chugs though. Thrash often has a fair amount of chugging in it but it's balanced out with great riffs. Not so here.

Nothing much for me to say ‘bout the new song cause all of you said it already and I pretty much agree w/nearly everything y’all collectively said but I will say, I'm more receptive towards the song cause at this point in the band's career anything that's even slightly better than TIW is an achievement in and of itself.

People love to hate this band now, just because of one album that wasn't as good as the last three. I think that the new song is amazing. The last two minutes are peak Dir en grey.

New single is decent despite the obvious problems in production. I just wish the song would be more like Diabolos, more cohesive. Ending of it is pretty great tho.

They obviously didn't reinvent themselves with that track, but noone expected them to and noone would ask them to if people hadn't gotten used to them doing it. It's not on the level of Vinushka or Diabolos, but it has a lot of strong moments. I'd rate it a strong 3.5.
