If the rest of album had followed the blueprint of songs like Contrarian, TalkTalk, The Doomed and By and Down the River, I think it could've been even more engaging. In other words, more urgent and energetic songs. But it's still pretty good though.

I agree with that. They aimed for more substance than style. Instrumentally it was more focused on a serene outlook than anything gritty or engaging. It has a dreamlike quality, which is strange for APC. The aggressive moments are where the album comes to life.
