I disagree. Genre is a fuzzy thing but Kacey comes firmly from a country background. This is country music with pop aesthetic.

I feel like people just have a very narrow conception of what “country songs” should feel like. Yeah, these songs are melodic and catchy, yeah they have clean, modern production, but I don’t see why any of that precludes it from being country. Is it just because she’s no longer singing about small town life in rural America? I mean it’s certainly country pop, whatever that means, but I think Kacey’s perspective and background as a country singer still informs these songs throughout.

Either way it’s a relatively arbitrary semantic point though.

you are the one who made this a dumb, smarmy semantics debate:

other than that, not sure how to respond to the gibberish in the top paragraph (listen to her earlier records and they still are melodic amd catchy, have cllean, modern production, and are about more than small town life in modern america...)

Oh yeah of course the previous albums had those things and weren’t just about this, it just trying to isolate the characteristics that might make it seem less country than the previous albums. I agree that the overall aesthetic of this album is poppier than before, the point is that I just don’t agree that this album is pop first, country second.
