If you ever doubt the enduring influence Pitchfork has just remember they slated 'Slipped' and 'Vanderlyle' - both tunes were maligned for ages after that.
Both are top tier.

I feel like those 2 songs (Carin and Nobody) are the ones meant to fill that "stripped down" void of sorts. I mean, it's not a void for me cause the album's nearly perfect for me as it is and I didn't really missed those elements, because it has songs like the title track that are unlike anything they've ever done. All of The National's essential elements (for me) are there.

I'm done trying to compare this to previous albums, I'll just keep listening and let it all sink in.

Watching the band perform 'Slipped' bathed in blue light and play an acoustic version of 'Vanderlyle' with the crowd singing every line...incredible stuff, greatest show I've ever seen.
Two weeks on Thursday, two weeks on Thursday...going to be emotional, 'Slow Show' will be tears after it being my first dance and all.

What I like about those stripped down tracks is that they are the ones that grew on me most over time...all the ones I mentioned on the previous page would have originally been among my least favorites on their respective albums but eventually I realized how essential they are. Maybe that means that one of these songs will eventually fill that void and I'm just not there yet.

I think this is probably where my rating will stay. Nothing wrong with a superb non-classic in a discography. High Violet remains the class of this band's incredible output.

Yeah Tuna, this is definitely its own beast (sorry), I just can't help but compare it.

I like how civilized most of The National's threads are in comparison to others. That speaks volumes on how great the band is, I mean, they spark debate, but in a good way; cause any of their albums from Alligator onward are a valid and justifiable choice as a favorite.

Sowing - (in the French accent of Monty Python's Meaning of Life' restaurant scene)
"Just one more waffer thin masterpiece?"
{salivates, gobbles, belches, then explodes}
Agreed, probably best to call an end to the feast of 5s here
