Okay, I had an epiphany last night listening through happiness last night (I actually listen to it often since it never made sense to me why it's the only album I don't like). So I kept going back and forth from happiness to other songs from other albums that I loved and, I figured out what it's missing;
epic moments
And I don't mean, "that burrito was epic bro" but that actual "heroic, grand in scale" sense.
Safe to say you dig the backSeat when the the music drops out and you're left with just a slow base drum and clean guitar and jonny softly singing and it slowly transitions (very slowly, it takes a literal minute) into a crescendo of THIS IS NOT, JUSTIFIED and Craig is going all out in the background. Lemon meringue tie, again all the instruments fade at once like the song is over before the drums alone rev back up for a measure or two, then the guitars and base come in one by one and when every one is on the same page again, THEN Craig comes in with his "I don't know why, I fight for you this way" and it's so high energy"
On death star, there ate les moments like this, but they are still there. Zoloft has that chorus "I should have listened to your friends" where kurts vocals fucking SOAR. Hot water on wool had the reprise where the instrumental comes apart in a psychedelic mess and Mess says DECIDE DECIDE DECIDE, I GOT A ??? AND IT'S WEIGHING ME DOWN, followed by cow bells (fuck yeah) then the song works it way back to that chorus "to rip the threads we've

sewn, feels like nobody's home" and the band's firing on all cylinders. Uneasy hearts with that "I have a thousand fucking fucks" breakdown, the music stops, tHen that funky clean guitar pulls you back into the chorus.
So many moments that feel risky, but they're done correctly and the pay off is Huge. It feels like they're reaching these crazy heights that not many bands can in the genre. Even this album mothership, as someone who was not sold on Tillian until this came out, has a lot of these moments that are a direct result of Tillians performance, it's too fresh for me to recall any by memory but almost every song has a moment that catches me off guard.
DBM2 had tons of 'oh shit' moments, I don't really enjoy that album but I would never question why anyone would have it in their number one spot. They were trying to do something unique.
Happiness, sounds like dgd writing pop songs. And when they do try something new, it just sounds 'quirky'.. and small. Nothing that would make people move in a pit, or drive recklessly on the freeway (you've done it, don't lie) or... really just make you feel something.
It's just. .. small.

Carl Barker makes me feel a lot of things man, that chorus is absolutely breath taking imo, and the guitar work in it is outstanding. Happiness just had everything for me, and it was far from small to me. Plus there's Tree Village with the REPEAT REPEAT towards the end with Kurt and Will screaming back and forth, that shit gets me pumped.
They've never been close to touching Happiness for me, it was just so damn good and it pains me whenever I see that people don't like it haha

Man of the Year was song of the year for 2016.
Also, Flossie and Exposed are the only songs that aren't bangers [2]

DBM is a perfect album with no songs that suck except maybe the very last one. This album has fucking Flossie.

Top 5 DGD songs for sure. Song makes me feel more than any other song they've written (or just as much but none surpassing it come to mind).
With all that said, WHY IS EVERYONE HATING ON FLOSSIE?????? That songs dope

yeah, steak, it has some cool parts but, they never just stick with it. there's ideas there that have potential but they come and go so quickly. I admit, the repeat repeat (I always heard 'repent'?) with the rolling drums is a great build up but it feels like just a build up, and the release is underwhelming.
also Carl baker is a great song, no complaints there.
Tillian did it better tho

Do you mean the acoustic outro? Because if you mean "Surprise. ..", how?
Hey girl, can I eat your soul? Is perfect mess lyrics. And the very end where he screams "I believe there's meaning no I believe there's nothing" in between Jonnys "one day I woke" is magical

Really? I thought Tilian butchered Carl Barker, he sounds so boring doing it compared to Kurt who sounded like he poured his heart all over it. But it's all good man, we have our difference in opinion and I respect that haha. You're still a swell dude

"Do you mean the acoustic outro?"
Yeah, Surprise is one of their best songs man.
"Really? I thought Tilian butchered Carl Barker, he sounds so boring doing it compared to Kurt who sounded like he poured his heart all over it. "
Agreed. My roommate bought the Tree City Sessions CD because I've been telling him to listen to DGD and he loves it but I can't stand it because Tillian ruins almost every song on there for me.

you should be a bro and make an album that's the exact same track list as tree city but the original cuts, and some how convince him He's doing a disservice to his dgd experience if he doesn't immediately start listening to that instead

I think Tilian slays every single track on TCS, although lets be real here, DGD's best vocalist always has been and always will be, Jon fucking Mess

Finally starting to dig Deception but god, Inspire The Liars through Betrayed by the Game makes me emotional as hell for whatever reason.
Not anytime soon, but I could see me 5ing this. This is pretty much the pinnacle of this type of music for me

self titled mess is great, but acceptance speech on he really started to expand his range, I think that started with secret band album,
worse mess by far is the screechy shit on dbm2

There's a certain charm to DBM2 Mess that I love
|
| |
dbm2 as a whole has a charm to it, and it sort of gets a pass in my book despite it being a let down, but I hear no charm in mess' performance alone. I think he knew it was off, because he switched it up huge on that secret band album and never looked back.
