Agreed, Fleeting Glance rulez.
And yeah, production sucks and makes it difficult to fully grasp the music at first, but if you get used to it the songs are really great and reveal their potential.

Era is also pretty good

Era might be the only song I particularly don't like. Will O The Wisp is pretty campy too.

Wisp is pleasant. Me likes.
I like that this feels more jam oriented and less structured than PC, but there are such a few amount of stand out moments. The album feels like its still in its demo phase

I like the more mellow moments. Some decent shred but they just set the bar too high if they're gonna try to shred now. It's good for what it is, but not for the Opeth everyone is used to. I still like it a lot for trying to be prog rock. Title track and Strange Brew slay.

I don't mind mellow moments, but they don't seem to have too much depth or impact. Maybe the album will grow on me. It's not bad, just inoffensive.
I like that Mikael is experimenting more with his vocal performance. His voice has always been good, but nowadays it sounds fantastic

his voice has gotten very powerful, but at the same time he's lost a lot of the warmth that made him so exquisite.

Don't know, I think it's mainly a matter of the poor mixing, his voice on Spring, Will O The Wisp or The Ward still shows his warm timbre a lot imo..

I may agree regarding The Ward, but the others, I don't know. I don't think I see it, comparing it with song segments like the beginning of Dirge for November and stuff.

Fair enough Rik. I always enjoyed his clean vocals a lot as I always felt them to be extremely pleasant and even soothing sometimes. He just further developed and progressed his skills in a very natural way without loosing that special timbre. That's my feeling at least :]

yeah, I'm not saying I don't like his voice anymore, it's just that I don't get as much out of it emotionally as I did with earlier releases. Idk, maybe better lyrics would help.

I think I understand what you mean. Maybe his clean vocals just hit harder in contrast to his growling so they might indeed have lost some impact on the recent albums. But they still bring dem feels.

Listened to a couple more tracks from this, and I'm glad the band is experimenting with their sound. Not the Opeth I know and love but might jam this every once in a while.

I think the vocal differences might also be due in part to the lack of layering compared to other records, but I might have been mis-hearing things.

That could be a factor, but it's definitely not the main difference, since the example I mentioned was the beginning of Dirge for November and there's no layering on that one

It's interesting to see, however, the shift in opinions. People seem to enjoy this album more recently and be more positive. It wouldn't surprise me if the ratings started to change.

I've seen people who didn't dig Heritage or PC like this more, it's definitely more dynamic and engaging in some aspects than those two.

Heritage is untouchable, but when compared to PC, it only pales when production is regarded. It's so unfortunate that SW was unable to produce it.

Album Rating: 3.3 | Sound Off
Production doesn't really bother me on any of them, Heritage is my favorite of the three in nearly every aspect though.
