Well personally, I wouldn’t compare the two band’s genre shifts despite the Katatonia/Opeth connection being very close. I think what I can say is that I thought Katatonia was more successful at doing the genre shift without extremely alienating its fan base.
Sure, there’s OG fans who think Dance Of December Souls or Brave Murder Day is their best album and disregard everything after it, and fans who think either Last Fair Deal Gone Down or The Great Cold Distance was when the band peaked, but at least those fans are smaller in number than say those who consider Opeth dead after Watershed.

hey just because i think the first two are the best doesnt mean i disregard everything after
that said i still havent heard this yet

Props to the dude that laid down drums on this (can’t remember his name). Didn’t think they’d find an adaquate replacement for Daniel, but I was wrong.

I wasn’t specifically talking about you park...I apologize if it came across as such. But it’s true that when Discouraged Ones was originally released, the closed minded fans of either DODS or BMD jumped ship never to return. Ironically, we consider BMD to be a high watermark album for Katatonia but it was universally hated at the time of its release according to Jonas Renkse (his words were “BMD was butchered by the fans and press when it was released”) and it wasn’t until LFDGD when an album of theirs was well received from the get go.

"park have you heard anything from this band?"
excuse me?

Discouraged Ones is practically BMD minus the shoegaze, the long songs but with Jonas’ clean vocals (though admittedly, he hadn’t yet mastered his now signature style here)

yep thats a great album

I should really clarify that I don’t think it’s remotely bad if anyone thinks their first two albums are their best (BMD’s in my top 5 of their discography) as they’re indeed excellent albums cause Katatonia IMO are one of the most consistent bands in terms of quality despite genre shifts (I’ve never rated them anything less than a 4 so far). Likewise, I don’t think it’s bad if you think vice versus (new Katatonia better than old Katatonia). If either era of the band is just not to your liking or that they had better albums than such and such’s favorite album, it’s cool but where I do draw the line though is when it becomes a case of closed mindeness but that’s the case with any band/album/genre/etc. for me really.

They changed so much of course you'll find many different opinions, especially with obsessed fans like you can find in these threads who see many differences even in their more recent stuff (even though some claim they are more of the same for some reason). I personally love when instrumental proficiency meets with great taste for emotions and melody, so this album is everything I want from modern Katatonia

best guitar work of their new era, which will give it more lasting power i'd imagine

"when instrumental proficiency meets with great taste for emotions and melody"
Yeeeah this is the absolute best quality of this.
They had the emotions, but that they were able to mix it with skill (imo since GCD) is just *MUAH*
That was a kissing sound.
