This is definitely better than the new one. I'm not even sure how much I like the new one.

why do they sound so damn happy in the new one

It's happy emo, henceforth referred to is hemo
Traditional sad emo acts must now include a "no hemo" tag in their bandcamp descriptions

usually a fan, feeling a light 3 on this new album. 3/4ths done. idk what it is about these guys but I just cant get into them other than Whenever, If Ever. something about them seems really ingenuine idk...

for me it's not so much that their other stuff seems ingenuine, it's just that Whenever's one of the most unashamedly genuine emo albums ever and the rest feel hopelessly less so in comparison

that's quite the truth right there. last three songs on this new album are everything the other 8 tracks tried to be and more. still doesn't put this at Whenever's level but it's above this I guess

"why do they sound so damn happy in the new one"
Is this earnest? Because I could not agree more, the album sounds so despondent to me; the band seem to grow more and more disillusioned (perhaps wrongfully so, but nevertheless) with each release. I think also that, though Blank #12 seems (for now) unengaging and rather misplaced, the run from Gram to Infinite Steve is some of the band's best work. I'd argue that while Harmlessness was more immediate - and far, far less disjointed (I hate Blank #12, it feels tacked on for the sake of tradition, and although Dillon and Her Son is a great song it doesn't seem to quite fit) - the new album is a lot more mature, musically and definitely lyrically. IMO, while the band still haven't quite hit their stride, and I agree Whenever is their best album, there is a lot of growth here.

I like the album a lot. To be honest, I only read that one comment of yours and it intrigued me, I probably jumped the gun in responding. (:

vocal melodies/inflections seemed strangely uplifting in the first two songs IMO but it definitely stopped after that. last three tracks are rly solid tho, it just seems like they are beating the whole post-rock thing over our heads

This album is seriously a trillion times more disjointed than the new one I truly don't understand
|

Yeah it makes this one worse by comparison, new one has a fully realized, weary vibe. One of the better Trump's America releases in the indie scene (definitely isn't a happy record). At a 3.7 for me
Highlights: Faker, Gram, For Robin (my bb), Marine Tigers, Infinite Steve

Also, besides some too on the nose political posturing, I think the new one might be their best lyrically

Yes hard. All of these are so amazing; For Robin is my current favourite, but Gram and Marine Tigers were perfect singles. The hook in Gram is orgasmic. I'm sorry for being sorry / The cause of anxiety.
My least favourite is probably The Future for now.
