the tremolo riff/blast beat combo is very black metal, but other than that it's definitely more prog/death. but I'm pretty terrible at genres because I throw around around genre tags based on anything I hear in the music (see my comments on Anaal Nathrakh and metalcore >.>)

The power metal argument is ridiculous. If there was a third tag, it should be folk IMO

yeah nobody would call Opeth or Enslaved power metal but they're full of clean vox.

My god, how can you look at genres with such a closed mind. Portal of I is basically black metal with strong contamination from other genres like spanish folklore and jazz. You can stick on the classical vision of black metal as low production noise and scream and listen all life long to album like under the sign of the black mark by bathory, or you can open your mind.

I don't like tags too, and if you need more than two to three words to describe a band, you've lost it. What I prefer to do is to take the main influence a band has and generalise it. Thus, I would describe Ne Obliviscaris like this: Metal>Death Metal>Progressive Death Metal>Progressive Death Metal with Folk and Classical Influences>.... You can never fully describe a band perfectly, so what you have to do is to get the closest to describing it withought nitpicking.

This is hands down album of the year. I don't know how you guys don't hear it but this band has black metal written all over it. And yes I listen to black metal on a regular basis.

Their stuff, including Portal, is more dm than BM.

I wouldn't say it's a black metal album at all

Its a tough nut to crack, metal-archive defines them with a generic extreme progressive

metal.

the band describes themselves as "Progressive/extreme/melodic metal (with violin)". that seems pretty good to me.

I have heard neither of those but if they're considerations for someone's aoty list I probably need to change that.
