Haha, if you told Chino to make another record like SNW he'd say fuck you. He hates that record even more than this one.

I don't think he explicitly hates the album itself, more like he hates the memories connected with it.

no, I'm pretty sure he just hates that album. The studio treated him like he could no longer compose songs and kept sending producers to take the reigns of the writing process. I don't think they even play anything from that album anymore, Chino likes to pretend it didn't exist.

At some point Valkoor is right, that period is when Chino got deep into his drug addiction. But I think it got worst during SNW

They still play a few songs from this one live, but Chino does apparently hate SNW since the only song they play from that one with any modicum of consistency is Hole in the Earth

They opened with Kimdracula when I saw them last year and it was cool af
Looking at some setlists rn and looks like they've been playing only the first verse of riverie on a not so consistent basis

Kinda sad that they never play Beware or Cherry Waves and stuff. I guess just because they had outside help for those they don't view them as real parts of their catalogue. Still doesn't explain why they never play Rats.

What outside help? Those are like my 2 favourite Chingo songs

Read up on the history of the making of that album. Or just scroll up a little bit.

fun fact somewhat related to the Chingo thing... back then he was kind of fat so my friends and I took to referring to him as Chimichanga Moreno. Fat shaming isn't cool but we were asshole kids and it was kinda funny at the time.

Dude that shit is still funny. China Mangina needs to lighten up about SNW tbh

The 6 months prior to SNW's release I was obsessively circulating Deftones forums (yes those existed back then) geeking out over every 30 second sample leaked from that record. I can honestly say it was the most anticipated album of my entire life and the peak of my Deftones fandom. I followed it from it's early stages of creation to the very last and I can tell you the band was at its lowest point while recording it. The process was slow, painful, and like pulling teeth. Drug addiction and disillusionment with bandmates were big factors in this. Also it was the last album released with Chi (RIP brother), so I can see why Chino would prefer this album as well as Eros just didn't exist because of all these factors. It was a very fucked up time when no one was at their best, so I imagine playing this stuff would be like opening old wounds.

SNW ended up being their best despite all the shit connected to it, kind of amazing what good things are born of such negativity. And from I've read, the band was back on good terms when they were recording Eros and they spent a lot of time doing things together as a band like playing Risk and stuff, just bonding. Really wish we could hear that album, especially with it being Chi's last performance and all. The descriptions make it sound pretty bizarre and awesome compared to how simplified their sound was for Diamond Eyes.

Seems like when there's a ton of negativity/issues/drama during the writing/recording/making process, a band either produces one of their best albums or their worst album.

I don't agree with SNW being their best but I didn't know about the Risk thing, that's really cool... Risk is one of my fave Deftones songs ever, but I did not realize that title had a literal meaning like that.

Lol I honestly don't know if there's a real connection there, I just remember Chino said during an interview that they would play really long games of Risk for days when they should've been recording. But then Chi's accident happened and kind of shook up their world before they decided to shelve the album and start writing Diamond Eyes instead. Apparently it was a purely creative decision and had nothing to do with Chi's accident but it's kind of hard to believe that.
