well they are according to wiki

i'm guessing it's mostly cause they were gaining popularity around the time of all those other bands
so they lumped them together with the rest

initially they were lambasted as pj ripoffs. yeah they had a similar sound to those seattle bands but they were never referred to as grunge when they came out. again, seattle origin became a requirement to be classified as grunge.

STP did sound similar, but Lloyd already gave the reason why they weren't grunge.

Actually, yeah, I compared it earlier to NWOBHM, and that was geographically based as well.

Yeah, STP has always gotten shit for being the first copycatter and therefore I suppose Post-Grunge band.

So was Dirt, and that was AiC's SECOND album.

Edit: Also Nevermind, which is more relevant I guess. Grunge had been gaining steam and crossed over to the

mainstream in '92. STP was still very much the second wave.

Interestingly though, despite the fact that Weiland has always gotten shit for being a Vedder ripoff, Mighty Joe Young (STP's original name) was already making a name for itself in SD (where Vedder lived), before Vedder joined PJ and moved to Seattle. Coincidence?

It's not that they came after, it's more that STP was seen as jumping on the grunge bandwagon when Grunge became popular similar to bands like Candlebox, Bush, Silverchair etc.

but still, they began during the formative years of the grunge scene

Right. See my above comment about Mighty Joe Young. It's probably pretty unfair to say they were copycats. But I'm just saying they've always gotten flack for being faux-grunge.

Remember an interview with STP where they said they had nothing to with grunge and were just a rock band.

Grunge is a term created by the media to define a period of fashion, youth movement, "Scene"

I don't think any band said outright "We are a grunge band"
