Maybe it's because I didn't like the rest of the album so much lol

What's wrong with the most commercially successful death metal record of all time?

maybe it's because Angel of Disease was written a solid 7+ years before the rest of this album?

how these guys garnered so much success despite being one of the shittiest dm bands ever is completely beyond me.

Elaborate, honestly I'm interested...

Not heard this yet but Altars & Blessed are pretty good, admittedly I don't have much to compare them against, they're no Death but still...

Okay, if you wanna know, a lot of DM from the days of yore had true emotion and most if all.. balls. Morbid Angel for me has always the like carnvial palm reader - neat enough to trick the common man with smoke and mirrors but at end of the day its just a facade. Sure, Altars was fun, but Blessed absolutely sucked and this wasnt much of a step in the right direction either. These guys are gimmicky and lame surface level dm. If you will, they're the bag-fries you throw at seagulls so they don't steal your burger.

"how these guys garnered so much success "

Well, you know how pop music is successful even though it's lame and superficial? But some of the songs are annoyingly catchy and despite your shame you like it a lot?

That's the thing.

Also, they are considered by most death metal aficionados to be an essential band and one of the best in the genre. Theyre not like Dethklok or something where people who dont really like death metal like them.

Maybe theres an infinitesimally small chance I'll someday hear what other people hear lol. But when bands like Gorguts, Immolation, Suffocation, Death, Pestilence, Dismember, Autopsy, Demigod, Entombed, Incantation, Demilich and Atheist were all doing things around the same time as Morbid's golden years, it really makes these guys sound like a bunch of clowns to - my ears at least. I doubt I will ever enjoy get any enjoyment out of this band beyond Altars Of Madness when the aforementioned bands are so much more solid.

So you like Altars then Evo? You find the rest contrived & disingenuous, or a pale imitation of the music they're said to represent?

Altars is good because it had some significant influence on DM as a whole. People say Blessed did too, but I have no doubt DM would be exactly where it is today even if that garbage bag full of disjointed ideas never saw the light of day. After that, it was a total crapshoot as the world watched the band play keep-up and capitalize on their commercial viability while slowing bloodletting what little soul their music had to begin with.

Whatever though, I doubt anyone agrees with me on that.

Truth. Among all the other terrible MA stuff, I kind of forget he is awesome.

Trey is the man, Altars is a classic, band is great. No idea what you're on about honestly. They're hugely influential and have a unique style all their own. I mean despite not being officially released Abominations was circulating in the tape trading scene and had a major impact on many bands including some that you mentioned.

@Evo - just to play devil's advocate for second... is it MA's supposed influence post-Altars that you have an issue with then? Maybe some people just enjoy their music & don't consider them the be massively important?
