Although it is true that they've kept a large part of their Miss Machine and Ire Works sound intact, I hear a little "Traced In Air" influence as well. DEP has listed Cynic as a influence in the past.

There is some similarities to "Crack the Skye" as well although DEP hasn't gone full-fledge progressive and probably never will. "Crack the Skye" averages seven minutes a song, has more time to create the aforementioned atmosphere, more solos, and obviously has a central concept. Some of the riffing and slower sections are reminiscent of each other though, but DEP always throws in some angular/grind riffs and energetic-percussion from their past as to not completely alienate their fans.

Crack to Skye is awful, this is good. So they mustn't have been influenced too much.

just out of curiosity, where do you sense that there are resemblances between Traced in air and this album? Hell, I see more resemblance towards Michael Jackson than Cynic.

Strange for you to mention that, since Chris Pennie has cited Sean Reinhert as one of his main influences, and he's obviously no longer in DEP

Liam Wilson "likes" Cynic also.

Small sections of "Farewell, Mona Lisa," "Gold Teeth on a Bum," and "Widower" remind me of Cynic, but maybe I'm reaching. Part of it may be the tom-rhythm in "Widower." The fading psuedo drum-solo in "Gold Teeth on a Bum." The double-bass over atmosphere in "Farewell, Mona Lisa." So I guess it's just the percussive elements that remind me of Cynic, which is indeed strange since Pennie is no longer playing with them but his influence may still be rearing its head.

But I may be getting a little too elaborate.

There's a Cynic section in "Crystal Morning". It's pretty damn hard to miss.
