I think it's fantastic anyway.

trying to get into this album. How can Uncle Tupelo be so damn good, wholesome, honest and interesting to me, but this just comes off as dull and uninspired to me? Maybe it'll grow on me more. I don't dislike it, but the songs just kind of happen. Nothing jumps out at me

Give it some time, this album took literal years to fully grow on me
Uncle Tupelo rules indeed, though

I mean, I love Uncle Tupelo, but for all their acclaim in the alt-country world, they're essentially just dressed-up roots rock. Tweedy's work with Wilco is far more progressive, ambitious and interesting, especially in this era.

I'd take Anodyne over any Wilco album, but the other three Uncle Tupelo albums probably get a little overhyped in my book due to their influential nature (still all great though).

Anodyne is kind of the only Tupelo that can fairly be read as a Jeff Tweedy album so fair comparison but man Jay Farrar was really on some other shit on Still Feel Gone/March, probably like those two more than any Wilco besides this

Uncle Tupelo's last 2 albums are perfection. Such simplistic, honest beauty. I guess that's what I wanted out of this album too, but it's not that at all. It is much more sprawling and ambitious. So far to me though, it is coming off as bland and bloated. Not saying that it is, because there is obviously a reason it is so acclaimed. Jesus, etc slaps and so does heavy metal drummer (even though it kinda feels like a Pavement b side to me). Idk, I'm just more interested in more conventional country rock stuff at the moment

I love Uncle Tupelo as much as the next guy but stuff like this and Summerteeth are masterpieces on a different level. I wouldn’t try to approach anything after the first two Wilco albums as a follow up or expansion of Uncle Tupelo really as they really became their own thing; maybe shifting your perspective will work. If you want more of that Uncle Tupelo kind of thing, stick to AM and Being There (or just listen to Son Volt instead of Wilco).

I know this is an old post but wow that's such a bad take. I can't think of one song that doesn't earn its place on this record, whereas UT is massively overrated

Interesting perspectives on this vs. Uncle Tupelo.
I'd take Anodyne over this, but otherwise this is better than the rest of UT's catalog in my view.
This album took years and years for me to truly appreciate though, a slow-burner.
