It's okay ascension, you predominately like metal. This isn't metal. Move on to the next one if you don't connect with it.

In case you haven't noticed, i don't only like metal. I can listen to anything and connect with it no matter the genre, this is just an exception. I want to like this.

'Opeth has some of the most artistically talented individuals on the planet.'
But they aren't as good as the 3 members of Rush....yes, only 3 members produce those sounds. Who knows, now that Rush is getting older, maybe Opeth would be lucky enough to open for them one day.

predominantly doesn't mean only but u do like a lot of metal. also, its okay that you can't connect with this at the moment and it's cool that you want to like it. maybe in time your opinion of this will change, or maybe not.
there's no point trying to figure out why people like shit. people just connect to music of all types. i fucking hate metal. am i going to figure out why people like metal? fuck no. just let it be dude. accept that this album has high praise and that you just don't connect with it.

That's not the way i work. I hate electronic music yet I finally got to the point where I learned to appreciate the stuff my friend likes. I fived Burial, Baths, attwn, etc. I got to the point where i could like noise stuff. I got to the point where i love classical. Why not this?

you're thinking too hard bro. this album isn't some genreless beacon sent to us from another planet. it's just hyper-creative alternative rock. just listen to how the words flow along with all the other sounds

Disagreed hard. If I wouldn't try to understand the appeal of something I didn't like at first, I'd be left out for tons of great music. I mean, I didn't really like jazz or hip hop when I first tried them (as a metalhead branching out to new stuff), but I read reviews and forums and discussed about the music. As I got to understand the appeal better and knew how I should approach that kinda stuff, I also stared to enjoy those genres more and more (atm I'm in a huge hip hop binge, and I also listen to a lot of jazz nowadays). And imo it's fun to know what other people enjoy about a particular album, even if I don't like it. Broadens my horizons and makes me appreciate the music more.
An attitude like "nope, I don't get it, and neither do I want to" just limits yourself from enjoying shittons of stuff.. just my few cents

It's about that connection though and the depth that it resonates to.
Clapping your hands to agadoo and having an 'enjoyable' laugh ain't the same as contemplating life while jamming Dylan.

lol, something like this? just because an album is highly acclaimed doesn't mean it isn't subject to regular rating conventions. giving a 3 to this album should be the same as for any other album
that said, a 3 on sput to most people is a borderline bad album lol

That's not the point I'm trying to make. I agree with pretty much everything you're saying. The point I'm trying to make in this regard, is that sometimes, people just don't like certain things, regardless of reasoning. There's more to enjoying music beyond production, musicianship, lyrics, etc. There's a certain connection that is made between a listener and music, in a certain point of time, that goes beyond all of those elements of music. There's music out there that you may not "get," at any given time, and than there's music that just clicks with you randomly without any real understanding sometimes.
So like I said, I hate metal nowadays. I used to love metal, but I don't enjoy it at all anymore. I used to hate jazz, but now I love jazz, just like how you're in your hip hop binge. Is there any reasoning behind it? Sure, but could I pinpoint all those reasons down to a tee for you? No. Tastes change constantly. Opinions change. You could hate carrots one day, and love it the next day. The point I was trying to make, is that if you don't get or understand the appeal of an album, even after people have given you enough reasons as to why it appeals to THEM and you STILL don't understand the love... what's the point of trying to figure it out even further? Yeah it's fun to try to understand why people like shit even if you don't like the album, that I get. But it gets to a point where you try to explain why you like something, and it just goes no where with another person. They just don't "get it," and they just troll or go against the grain. That's when it becomes pointless.
Let it happen organically, if it ever reaches that point and if not, that album was never really for you to begin with.

Holy fuck. They're pretty good, but calm the fuck down. Like, this thread did not need a shitstorm reminding us that Opeth and Rush are both overrated.

'Overrated' is more of a compliment, really. It just means everyone loves it except for some guy on the internet. Chill down
