“ saying Kendrick is where he is today because of corporations and not because he's talented and genuine is at best goofy”

Lol. Kendrick is practically bigger than every 80s rapper combined, and nearly every 90s artist combined. If you think that’s entirely, or even primarily, because of “skill” you’re a big doofus face.

I don't actually disagree with you, the industry definitely picks and chooses who they prop up due to current events

more like Dre picked and chose

also once you compose a song as catchy as Alright where cable tv shows want to use it for commercials you know you're set in hip hop history

“ what I appreciate is that this is more ambitious than any other hip hop album I've heard so far. Both lyrically and instrumentally. Plus I'm a sucker for concept albums, and this kinda checks that box. If you know of something similarly ambitious I'm taking recs.“

I can at least see where you’re coming from re this being ambitious re instrumentals (although this really has a lot to do with the ‘product’ aspect of this album and it’s multi million dollar production budget).

But when you say this is more ambitious LYRICALLY than any hip hop album, you’re just objectively wrong. As others have pointed out, Binary Star, Jedi Mind Tricks, Deltron 3000, Wu-Tang members/affiliates, MF Grimm, MF DOOM, Nas, and others have made far better lyrical and conceptual stuff. This albums lyrics are highly overrated bc the production makes them sound so much better.

I don't disagree with the general logic, and you could use it for this album, but Kendrick got big with GKMC and that one is much less connected to current events. That album exploded simply because people loved it. Obviously kendrick's "skill" alone didn't get him here. With a lot of music in this space you can often thank the producers more than the artists themselves

the lyrics by themselves may not be at your golden standards but it's not just the production but also the delivery that carries them.

The delivery is excellent but it’s not my cup of tea, I think it actually takes away from the lyrics and he sacrifices some meaning for flashiness

yea there are times where his voices knock me out of the flow but I think you just drew the line on what people look for in lyrics

and yes delivery is a huge part of it. I haven't listened to every underground artist listed above, but the vast array of topics kendrick covers here, the poetic orientation of his lyrics, and the way he delivers them through so many different moods, settings, and voices make it stand out to me. There were some vocal parts on this album I had no idea were Kendrick's voice until like a year after it came out. the dude is versatile af. And up until his last couple bad publicity moves, he was very low-key and humble and well-spoken

I agree with most of what you’re saying actually. I just think Kendrick belongs as much in the pop genre as he does hip hop, if not more.

Maybe you could argue that with DAMN, but not anything before it. Idk how you can rap on every track and be more pop than hip hop. especially when many tracks are rooted in jazz, funk, etc

He wouldn't have been able to make an album like this if this was his first album.
