can we just delete the last two pages?
@Faenir: no worries, yeah I like the games (still, at nearly 32).
Disappointing to hear that it's all gone quiet, progress was understandably slow anyway so I was trying to curtail any potential enthusiasm that may have seeped through... difficult when we can see what the guy is capable of mind.

hot take but black and white 1 were WAY better than 2, and I'd call em the second best gen behind 4

My method is to report everything and hope for the best.

@Erikwithafro Dam I missed your comment. Its cool that you browse this site, is that out of search for new music or do you like returning to Vektor threads to see the impact your music has on people?
Now to answer your question. I don't think this or any of Vektor's releases are bad (I give positive ratings to the first two releases out of respect mainly), I'm just not a big fan of tech thrash.
The musicianship of Vektor is incredible, the transitions between melodies are fluid in a way most "technical" bands not named Atheist fail to do imo.
The problem is the melodies and song structures constantly just bring to mind the classics/pioneers of the genre. (Coroner, Voivod and thrash in general) I do think Vektor were doing something fairly unique and worthy of praise. Its more that I just don't like highly melodic metal.
@Jacquibim
"scaruffi didn't like it prob"
not true btw. As much as I admire the Italian man's take on things, I don't agree with him consistently. Especially his metal, jazz and classical lists. He gave Vektor very high ratings anyway.

~This is where I'm going to go crazy deep and attempt to analyse exactly why I have a bias against metal.~
I often listen to a metal song and it just reminds of other songs in so many ways. This ruins my liking of something as I prefer art that doesn't have its influences on the surface level or at least trys to integrate ideas from multiple sources.
That is something that doesn't seem to happen as much in other genres. I don't know why this is the case, because even in punk which is more melodically simple/standardised I don't often get the same break of immersion from the album.
I suspect I gravitate towards riffs that are grounded more in the "metal gallop" or the standard chords of folk music and classical. I see these as a foundation for much of music, they are so scattered across most genres of music that no reference points alert in my mind.
But what I hear in the melodies of thrash metal is something I think only came out of the 80s. I only hear Metallica's and Slayer's classics, Motorhead/Discharge and Killing Jokes "The Wait". I am not suggesting these melodies are a clean slate brand of music, that have no relation to the past (nothing does). But they are so distinctive that there roots don't even come to mind, even if they may just be taking standard chord patterns into a new context. There are few melodies in music that are ingrained in my mind so much, so respect to metal for having multiple.
I could also talk about Blackmore and Iommi but I'd probably have to blurt out twice as much as I already have.
I considered not posting this as it is ideas I haven't really developed/ focused on enough yet. Probably just seems incoherent

I'd like some more examples of your findings.
Cuz I'm not compleeeetely sure what's up with that.

What findings are you looking for? Are you talking about what I found out about my biases?
|
| |
@GhandhiLion Some of the first, but if I'm being very honest, more of the second (as vain and shitty as that may seem, trying to be more honest in life these days).
I appreciate you taking time to write a more detailed response. And a lot of what you said hits home for many people, seems like it just doesn't do it for you, which is totally fine. I love BTBAM because they have tons of parts that hit me like a ton of bricks, but a lot of the underground metal community shits on them saying it's meandering, wankery, and nonsensical (which it is sometimes haha). Things hit everyone differently, and it's always cool to have a level headed talk about it, so I really appreciate what you had to say.
As for what I'm doing with my life, still chugging away on writing an album. It might be the slowest thing I've ever done, probably since it's just me and it's easy to get distracted or psych yourself out when writing tunes...I also have an offer to audition for a pretty high profile act within the underground. Initial talks have been great, and learning the songs has been quite fun, so we'll see how that goes. What's everyone else up to? Anyone make it big, win the lottery, drink some coffee, taste an amazing new dish lately?

Usually, people that don't know a genre will say it all sounds the same.
"Salsa ? It all sounds the same"
"Reggae? It all sounds the same"
"Metal? It all sounds the same"
and so on. Try actually listening to albums and you'll hear there are many, many differences between bands and songs. Some riffs are occasionally reproduced but it's not that frequent, really.
|
| |
Of cause there are differences, When did I see it all sounds the same? why do you assume I dont listen?
Every musician/band is unique(Even Greta Van Fleet) But few songs are original. I think Vektor were fairly original. Something that is rare.

"I only hear Metallica's and Slayer's classics, Motorhead/Discharge and Killing Jokes "The Wait"."
= everything sounds the same.
You basically admitted there that you didn't understand shit about metal lmao.
And i disagree every band / song is unique. Some bands are clear ripoffs of others, same for songs.
