“Nothing here gets in the bones, hip-hop just doesn’t reach the soul like it used to“
Zak...these are the exact reasons why I LOVE this album. You may be due for a re-spin my good sir. If Momma and Complexion don’t hit you in the soul then I must wonder if you have one!

I don't think someone who didn't rate a single hip hop record 5 is a really good judge on what makes good hip hop. I feel like he's not a fan of the genre in general so no wonder he doesn't get this

I think he just likes the old school sound that all those 90s records have that he listed. and to be fair, there's still a ton of that these days too. MF projects, Black Thought, etc

And yet he didn't give a 5 to any of the essential albums that coined that era. He's just not into hip hop

Butt.
I gave momma and complexion a re-listen.
The one thing that stood out is the line ‘I made a flower for you out of cotton’ which is a great line.
The songs themselves are far too slick for my tastes though and to me come across as a bit lounge lizard shmoozy (I can almost smell the shite aftershave) and lack bite.
Moving on, Blacker the Berry which attempts to be spat out just comes across as a bit lukewarm but hey what do I know.

this one is locked in time, don't think anyone has genuinely listened to this from start to finish since end of year list season 2015

"his one is locked in time, don't think anyone has genuinely listened to this from start to finish since end of year list season 2015"
lowkey true for me
i always liked gkmc better but it also has infinitely more staying power

But it’s a false statement because .2 seconds of research will find the Cult of K.Dot, who have exclusively listened to this shit on repeat since the day it came out 5 years ago. They haven’t even heard DAMN, other albums are merely a whisper of a memory from long ago.
Maybe they should branch out a bit. Trust me, I’ve been trying to convince them.

How is this locked in time? This album is as timeless as it gets

i listened to it in full maybe 6 months ago.
only reason i dont do that often is because it's kind of emotionally draining and i always feel like i have to do the full thing, not just the singles. oh and it's also like 75 mins long
@zak Hey, just glad you gave 'em a shot haha

you don't have to listen to an album once a week or even once a month for it to be great or a masterpiece

Kriss Kross - Totally Krossed Out is more timeless than this.

The reason younger people tend to like this album is because they don’t even notice the “product” aspect of it. They grew up with this as the norm.
It’s not that Kendrick isn’t talented, it’s that this album is a commercial watering down of his talents to appeal to a wider audience.
If you grew up on new hip hop, this probably doesn’t matter to you. When you grew up on old hip hop, it sounds corny as shit - like black N’Sync.

I think older people tend to throw the ‘product’ word whenever they don’t really get newer stuff. I don’t say it wasn’t manufactured at all, but I’m p sure lots of yesterday’s hailed artists/albums also had that ‘product’ factor yet only the older generation at the time would throw that kind of argument. Guess I’ll be the same at some point.

I started out as an old school head who wouldn't even give guys like Kendrick a chance. I was a hardcore east coast 90s hip hop fan. That was back then between the age of 16-20 or smth like that. Now I'm 27. Needless to say I was a fucking ignoramus. "Commercial watering down of his talents" If this album is commercial, every 90s album is. The musical arrangements draw so heavy from jazz and funk that the majority of people won't be able to get into it.
