I spun this a bunch when it came out but like, now it's just relegated to a few songs coming up in my death/post-metal playlists. thinking the new one will have more staying power.

I personally can’t imagine taking individual songs off of an ulcerate album for a playlist. For me these guys are an album band through and through

Way she goes
As far as the albums go tho i gotta say the new one didn’t blow me away like it’s doing for most everyone else. Their albums have historically taken time for me to digest and unravel, I’m certain it will grow but Stare was fairly immediate for me
How’s the saying go, different ulcers for different folks?

It's a funny one, I'd say the individual songs on Cutting are more varied internally, but there's more contrast between the songs themselves on Stare. Stare's a smoother listen overall but man, the highlights on Cutting have it beat imo.

Also the riffage at the end of Further Opening the Wounds robbed me at gunpoint

Stare is the last album of theirs where I would consider anything striking immediate (it still hasn't yet practically, for me) but for my taste I appreciated how Cutting does what Stare was doing while going back to the songwriting strength/modality of Shrines, which was basically my hope for the new album to begin with (happy face).
Top three for me is still Fire > Shrines > Destroyers but I can take songs from most any album and rock them anytime it seems fit to, 'cause it's silly how tracks from Fire/Destroyers era are still as top tier now as when they came out, the quality has simply ceased to wane throughout all that time. I guess that can be said for a lot of music but to nail it with a genre like this is truly remarkable. Same could be said for Artificial Brain and a few other acts, of course, but the tone and delivery to me is what's key, for example- what other dm out there is nailing the atmosphere the way Omens demonstrated so many years ago?
