Yeah... I kinda' agree. I guess it boils down to genre descriptors not being enough? Prog is super fuckin' massive and putting stuff like YYZ, Wish You Were Here, Epitaph, and Days of Future Passed in the same bucket and sayin' "yup, they're all prog" just doesn't do any of the very unique takes/sounds justice.

oh i definitely think theres other prog thats moody and emotional, all of VDGG for instance, and i think even the gabriel genesis stuff was very song-oriented but i almost think those guys plus crimson and tull are, while still very musical and reliant on hooks/grooves at times, sound a bit too "british" to have the universal appeal of pink floyd. tull definitely apes the blues especially on their first 4 records but theres also the shit that sounds like 1800s music which is one reason why youll never see a minstrel in the gallery t-shirt at walmart. crimson also took a lot from classical, very euro-anglo-whatever music

and yeah prog is very wide and obviously you have stuff like hawkwind and can and kraftwerk which can be pretty minimalist and often very groove oriented, but i was mainly talking about the big anglo medieval type prog image the word conjures in peoples heads - yes, genesis, tull, ELP, giant, that sort of thing

i think its interesting that should the bands tour today, rush and pink floyd are the only groups from that era who could fill up a 15k+ seater arena. granted genesis packed stadiums on their final tour recently but they werent an arena level band until they'd ditched any sniffable hint of prog in their music

yet rush dont share any of the bizarre traits that led to floyds success, they crept into arenas with soaring anthemic rockers like sawyer and limelight and spirit of radio which are still really fuckin busy technical songs. but throughout the 70s they were largely marketed in the press as a heavy metal band for that time so a lot of folks who hated prog still dug rush cause it had commonalities with zep or deep purple and so on

of course all through the 70s yes and jethro tull and ELP packed the biggest venues in the country but they werent able to maintain that throughout their career. probably put out too much shitty ass music whereas floyd only put out a couple of stinkers everyone sort of collectively forgave them for. no disrespect to any division bell fans

"whereas floyd only put out a couple of stinkers everyone sort of collectively forgave them for. no disrespect to any division bell fans"

PF lost their edge after Roger Waters left, and mostly became pleasant AOR, with good bits and stunning live shows. Their legacy and aura remained intact.

And anyway, 'The Division Bell' ends with 'High Hopes' and that's as good a canonical final statement as any could hope for, IMO.
