I was 14 when Cobain died. I remember how Nirvana went from a popular band to almost unrivaled Icons the day Courtney had him knocked off.

I love gkmc and I love the fact that this album sounds completely different yet is just as amazing, if not better.

"I was 14 when Cobain died. I remember how Nirvana went from a popular band to almost unrivaled Icons the day Courtney had him knocked off." Which is pretty much what happened with 2pac

I'm a bit biased as I was a massive Pac fan before he died, but yes, admittedly he was vaulted through death.

The thing is the music here is much more impressive than the rapping

Both Big and Pac were huge before they died. Ready to Die and All Eyez On Me were monster albums and everyone I knew had them, but their legends definitely grew after deaths, especially considering they only happened 6 months apart and were clearly connected. I had both of those records basically memorized, as well as Me Against the World, before my 16th birthday. They both died shortly after that. Life After Death came out almost immediately after BIG died, and 2Pacs Makaveli album was the same story. Both were massive, and a bit overrated due to the timing of the releases.

Just looked up the best selling hip hop albums of all time and nuumber 1 is Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by Outkast. Damn. I love Outkast but I underestimated their poularity it seems. Now that I think about it though they always had a lot of crossover appeal

Lol that one is another good example for me. Speakerboxxx is a near 5 as its absolutely loaded with bangers (Bowtie is probably the best song ever made). Love Below is terrible IMO as its experimental and boring. It is a bit ironic that the biggest hit and one of the biggest Hip Hop songs of all time (Hey Ya) was on that side, to be fair.

Hey Ya is one of those songs I've legit heard probably 2000 times and I'm still not sick of it.

this album is the quintessential example of a "grower", I find it so dense that it takes several listenthrus to even scratch the surface.
I agree with a poster a few pages back that Momma is one of Kendrick's strongest tracks, highly underrated. The music on that track, the cowbell, the symbolism.
