It has some bangers, but most of it is pretty meh.

Most of the album it's a snoozefest, severely watered down compared to the previous

Black album isn't bad but when I listened to it after the first 4 it felt extremely boring. An unremarkable 3/5 record. RIP is immensely better but it didn't have radio singles to drive sales so here we are.
Never hated Metallica in general though, their first 4 are too good for that.

The real reason is that they did a Metallica and became increasingly dumbed down as the 1990s went on looking for sales, culminating in Risk.

On a random side note, dibs on "Music is my Business" as a Megadeth tribute band name. xD

I am afraid you are correct - Countdown was pretty much their attempt at a Black Album (complete with wrinkly old man) - but I will never understand that mindset. If they still had bills they should still trust in their music, especially after making a world class album.

Countdown was a weird creative choice given that Rust in Peace ended up being one of the most pleasantly surprising commercial successes in music at that point.
