These guys are actually geniuses. Just because they're different, weird, avant-garde, experimental, or whatever they wanna be called now, they're manipulating people into thinking this is any good, when in fact they're just as average as they have always been. Manipulative af.

These guys have pretty clearly spent a good portion of their career trying to emulate Metallica so I wouldn't say anything they've done is better.
That said I'm loving the hell out of this.

I can see where people are coming from with this album, good bad or in-between. It certainly is a divisive release.

"trying to emulate Metallica so I wouldn't say anything they've done is better"
not following the logic here hm

surprising enough i'm loving an ax7 record, which would have been unheard of ten years ago, but the fact ax7 are the band pushing the boundaries of mainstream rock/metal this hard in 2023 is the biggest shock.

Idk if it's been mentioned but check out Nik Nocturnal's interview with Matt, it's excellent. He goes super in depth on the making of the record, also cool that he says WtF is the one A7X record he considers their most grounded and special and goes back to the most

I watched that yesterday. Never seen him in an interview before then and he seems really grounded and chill.

“These guys have pretty clearly spent a good portion of their career trying to emulate Metallica so I wouldn't say anything they've done is better.”
Metallica is infinitely more boring though. All of the Beach Boys influence on COE alone makes it more interesting than anything Metallica has done. Butt-rock-ass band

yeah besides hail to the king and a few parts of nightmare the metallica comparison has never made sense to me
i think a7x has filled a similar role the last 15ish years that metallica did in their heyday... being this big mainstream metal act with a down to earth look and and a lot of "attitude" while also being technically proficient enough to gain the worship of up and coming players... but i think that's where the similarities really end.

Half way through my first listen and wasn't expecting this! Definitely an interesting listen. There's a lot to sink my teeth into here, not sure how I feel about it yet though, some really cool guitar segments though!

This album seems to take off from Track 8 in ways I wasn't prepared for lol. I kinda love it now!

Nobody has joined the ranks of SOTY pretty fast. Such a sick song. Whole album is a banger, i wouldnt expect to say that for A7X

I'm not actually even sure how to describe this album. It's a roller coaster, but it's so carefully and intentionally designed that even when you think the turn it took is going to crash, it miraculously stays upright. I haven't been much of an A7X guy over the last decade, but this is a game-changer. Gonna be ripping this for a while.
Great review. I don't think rock & metal are as stagnant as you imply, though. There's certainly a lot of problems hindering the genres, but it's not like it's horrible out there.
