Some high-octane riffage on here.

It's all about that acoustic playing though. Honestly some of my favourite acoustic guitar work on any album, not just my favourite as far as Opeth are concerned.

heh
ive heard that mikael doesnt like this album and thought the bass performance was way too overdone, or something along those lines
|
| |
Well yeah, that can be said JT.
However it's the mix of all the elements for me.
Not gonna keep nitpicking 'cause it's kinda silly tbh.
Bottom line: this rules.
Seeing that you always struck me to be one with strong folky leanings, it would make sense for the acoustic work to appeal more to you though.

"ive heard that mikael doesnt like this album and thought the bass performance was way too overdone, or something along those lines"
yep. it's the main reason Johan left the band. he wanted the bass to be have more of a dominant role, Akerfeldt said fuck that. this albums bass is just sick

Akerfeldt was wrong. This is Opeth's best release and the bass is incredible.

A good case can be made for it yea.

The bass is sweet on this album. But I like the albums that precede and follow it significantly more.

I think I slightly prefer this to MAYH personally.
Both crush SL and BWP for me.

Don't get me wrong: MAYH has perfect bookendings and awesome highlights. It's just that this flows so well, it takes me to another place.
Both have strong cases for 'em anyway.

To Bid You Farewell is an awesome closer.
