I don't think they're ripping anyone off. They're just playing a mix of styles that have been done to death and done better by a lot of bands. Again, there are original moments here and there but just a lot of blah. It's not memorable music a lot of the time.
By dad rock I just mean 70s and 80s mainstream rock... I'm talking about stuff like the end of Heart in Hand or the chorus of Lovelorn Crime. It just sounds like generic soft rock ballad schlock to me. Obviously there's other more interesting stuff in both of those songs but they can't seem to shake these plain, generic moments that just weren't a problem on Heritage or even Pale Communion...

yeah Opeth wins the more they sound like themselves

I think this is less consistent and better for it. Sorceress was a homogenous mass of boringness, this reminds me more of Heritage finally, with weirder twists and turns. Plus they've started to incorporate new ideas and influences again. Lovely record.

This is an improvement over Sorceress for certain, on par with PC (which I found good as well) and slightly below Heritage (which I love) for me.

Nice ranking! I'd place this above PC but for the rest I agree.
Yeeessssss number 1 on the front page. Well done everyone.

Spinning the English version for the first time now. There's definitely some hiccups along the way, such as the one in The Garotter, when he says
"The beautiful people
Look down from ruby vantage points"
And beautiful is all rushed to fit in the rhythm. I prefer the Swedish version, it sounds more expressive. Almost wish they had a Swedish Sorceress too, who knows what it would have done with its sound!

Yeah so this is officially the best prog era opeth album. Still hate it though

That makes me happy/sad!

Only heard this one but after the lame intro Charlatan is one of the coolest things the band has done in general, incredible chorus and genuinely wacky.
|
| |
Yes Charlatan's vocals (chorus especially) are very catchy over the djenty distorted basses, just wish it built to something more.

I really enjoy it, they sound energetic and into it for the first time in years. At least to me.

Wanna hear the Swedish version now, guess the original version of the lyrics should be better?

Yeah this definitely sounds more “Opeth” than Pale Communion and Sorceress.
Heritage still had the “Opeth” feel to it : )

For me, best after Ghost Reveries. My boys killed it.

Personality in abundance.

The Swedish version is superior I'd say.
Personality is the right word Demon, so much personality here. Especially coming from Sorceress...

People doesn't seem to like Pale Communion but I loved it tbh, more than Heritage, then again i didn't listened to Heritage that much, maybe i should revisit it. This album is growing too tbh but Im not sure what score it deserves.

Heritage benefited so much from revisits for me. Didn't like it for some years when it was released, then suddenly there was a cosmic shift and it totally clicked for me. Incredible album, became one of my faves.
