Lol I bumped your Sound Off, as you probably have a point about the layering. Maybe that's why you're a 2.5, but I stick with my 2 as there's not one track here I would listen to again.

I’m not quite as harsh but there isn’t one song here that’d break into my top 50 National songs.
Probably a 3.5 track rating ceiling - but staying positive for now and have four sitting on a 4 star rating

What’s the best National album fogza?

This album made me realise that Alligator is amazing when I could never get into it so there's that

Well, I can only give my opinion.
1) Boxer
2) Alligator
3) I can't decide between High Violet and the Cherry Tree / Virginia EP (if combined)
4) Trouble will find me and Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers would alternate for me on a given day
5) The National
6) Sleep well beast and I am hard to find occupy the same space for me, albums that don't speak to me at all

DD, did you list your National album order earlier in the comments? I'm guessing we MIGHT agree on Boxer but otherwise your list will look very different.

Boxer, HV and TWFM are all 5 out of 5 albums for me so yeah, we pretty much agree on Boxer

Album Rating: 2.5
Nobody asked but: Boxer, Alligator, High Violet, TWFM, SWB, Sad Songs, IAETF, S/T
With HV thru SWB alternating depending on the day

Ok, so I'm reasonably in line with Anatelier.

Album Rating: 4.0
Yeah I mostly agree with anat. For me it’s High Violet > Boxer > TWFM > Alligator > SWB > Sad Songs > IAETF > debut
The top three are almost interchangeable though.

Album Rating: 3.5
A > B > HV > TWFM > SWB > SSFDL > S/T > IAETF
|
| |
Album Rating: 3.5
As of now, for me it's HV > Gator >= TWFM > SWB > SSFDL >= Boxer > IAETF
Haven't heard the debut. Actually been craving Boxer recently so a rise up the ranks could be imminent.

Yeah I mean even given how much Sad Songs just grew on me putting it ahead of Boxer is kind of wack.

Just had my best listen to this yet. Really, really close to bumping to a 4. Aside from the interludes I kind of love everything from the title track on.
Gonna be time to give this a bit of a rest soon though, I’ve listened exclusively to The National since Thursday night.

I pretty much agree with anatelier, tho HV is a close second after Boxer at #1, and Alligator is 3rd imo
I almost want to bump my rating down having just learned, from you Boney in Rowan's review thread, that they made a worse version of Hairpin Turns on the album compared to the music video version, like why would they do that.
|
| |
Album Rating: 4.0
Haha, whoops. Yeah it’s not huge but that extra piano in the video version heightens the impact of the ending for me.

Album Rating: 3.5 | Sound Off
Yea and thanks for mentioning that btw cause I remembered loving Hairpin Turns as a single, but ever since I've been jamming this whole album it didn't have the same impact, which bummed me out a bit. But it turns out that I just hadn't noticed that they just made an inferior album version with a less amazing outro. Well, off to download the youtube vid and have that be the version I listen to probably haha

Yeah I had had the same experience with not feeling the album track quite as much as I had the music video. I checked and the version they put on Spotify as a single is the same as the album so they must have used that version only for the video which is a bit odd. Interesting how a tiny change can make all the difference.

I think this is really good, but sort of aimless in parts and maybe runs off the rails a couple of times. Also Rylan is a mega jam, but just seems like they squeezed it in there. Good album though
