I mean FB was my first Tyler so I'm not exactly an authority, I just know this album was good and Igor is better.

Don't give up on the album before you get to the end

It's pretty back loaded IMO

i hope so, because i'm not feeling the first half so far. on puppet atm. having a similar reaction to this as i did to childish gambino's awaken my love: it's all very slick and polished and smooth as butter but there's very little to latch onto. nothing has really stuck out to me so far, just sounds like every other artist hopping on this jazz/soul/rap trend that really only a few can pull off without it sounding super homogeneous.

Uh oh. Awaken My Love is a borderline classic to me. Maybe that doesn't bode well for you haha.

yeah that album sounds sterile to me. some great songs, def rly solid production and what not but i can't help feeling it all sounds too samey without a lot of rly memorable moments outside of redbone being solid.

'what's good' and 'gone, gone / thank you' are carrying this album right now.

I really don't think IGOR is part of the jazz rap trend at all, Flower Boy is way closer to that sound

okay, this is probably more fitting of that descriptor, but i think it still falls in line with that overall aesthetic. all style no substance. i have to say though, "what's good" is seriously dope af. immediately adding to my 2019 playlist.

interesting point. I actually really like how the album decentres Tyler, and rapping in general in favour of an almost unrecognisable style. its a really bold move that wouldn't work if the production wasn't so fucking good (best I've heard in a minute really). but I can also set see why four minutes of are weeeee still friends could seem like all style no substance to people lol

i shouldn't say 'all', there are a few tracks there i definitely dig. like i said, "what's good" (which i've played like 4 times now) is damn good -- the entire back half, as sowing said, is super solid. i also thought i'd like the album more since i'm not a big fan of tyler's voice for the most part (he does use it to great and creative effect at times though, mostly in goblin, even though it's my lowest rated tyler album, it had its moments). i'm happy it's taken a backseat, but it's sort of lacking in identity a bit at the same time? idk, these are just initial musings, i'm definitely gonna play it again a couple more times and see if i like it better. not sure if it was immediate for you guys.

nah took me 3-4 listens to even get my head around it honestly. was distracted by the production and trying to get my head around the vocals for the first 2. on 3rd it occurred to me that it's (as far as I can think) the first real rap breakup album, and that concept kind of helped me get a handle on it.

yeah man, that's going to be a real soty contender for me. def best rap song i've heard so far this year (is there a lot of good rap in 2019? if so i'm missing out on it). gonna give the album a couple more spins when i'm more attentive and see how it fares.

you hear new flyro, rowan? that tracklist has my head spinning. 27 songs seems like way too much, granted i'm sure a handful of them are interludes

I got a couple songs in and had to switch to something else, nothing at all bad about them it was just more intense than I was in the mood for. everything I heard was great and the Anderson Paak feature goes hard; incredibly excited for the Denzel feature too

and yeah track times are on wikipedia, bunch of one-minute songs as you'd expect

all style no substance for IGOR? You fucking mental?!

I think the issue is people just hear scratchy production and go 'oh Tyler's back to being a half-crap artist again.' IGOR is his best album for sure, I'm the dude who found Flower Boy way too slow like he matured but without dodging that how slow paced thing most artists do when 'maturing.'

IGOR oozes so much emote, the instrumentals are bouncy as fuck with all the jazz-tinged songwriting Tyler's best at. There's really nothing not to love unless you can't dig off-key singing and warped vocals.
