Oh definitely. The best footballer in the history of the sport is arguably from Argentina too which also plays a role. I would like to know how popular is basketball is in ARG though since they've done so well in the last 12 years or so.

Where I'm from, it's all hockey, and sometimes (American) football. Everyone seems to go crazy over the FIFA world cup too, however :P

basketball has been always second to football in argentina, and has somewhat increased its popularity
because of the good national team we've been having the last years but its nothing, really nothing
compared to the influence football has on people
plus, the basket national league goes quite unnoticed for most of the population, whilst the football
one is huge, its very passionate too
