I mean Blackstar has a pretty nice avg on RYM too does that mean 8,000+ people are also fondling Bowie's nutsack? And I had this rated high as it is before his death; his death didn't necessarily reinforce the rating but it was more or less the fact that I love the overal jazzy sound of the album combined with that eerily dark atmosphere

Good for you for enjoying it, but to me, the fact that nearly 2 times as many people weighed in on this record then did the one before, and around 4 times as many more then the one before that, tells me that the story of this record has had an effect on how its viewed. His Cancer, his death, the reviewers fawning over the bittersweet swan song idea, and a culture that's willing to pimp tragedy and stroke itself. Yeah, I can totally believe 8000 can be full of shit. Though i don't doubt, that some people may be like yourself, and authentically like this record, I don't believe the community actually thinks this is the second greatest record made this year. I know people who have given this a five and haven't listened to it once since spring.

It's a decent album. It won't make my Top Ten for the year, though.

I mean guys I get you don't like it as much as a bunch of other people but ffs it was after all intended to be a swan song. There's just as mamy people genuinely mourning and loving the music as there are the hipsters you guys loathe so much. It all just sounds like you guys are making blanket statements I mean no mainstream album these days are hype-proof. Stop being so cynical and ignore what everyone else says and enjoy (with lack thereof) the music as it really was intended

Personally, man, I think good and bad is all worth the discussion. If every critic is gonna be called a hater, these threads are just gonna be fan boys jerking themselves off. If my words made you consider something else, I'm happy regardless of whether or not I've convinced anyone. The desire to piss on opposition on this site is weird.

I absolutely understand where you're coming from, it's just that more often than not people who speak out against popular albums on the site tend to have an "edgy" attitude about it. I myself am occasionally guitly for the same thing as are the same people who are railing against you and Gyro

I hear ya, man. If theres one thing I've learned to do online, it's to say how I feel... because whatever mental conversation someone has with themselves over what you said is gonna be had anyway. But it doesn't have to be your problem. I wish the best journey for everyone, so I'm okay with saying what I think sucks or rules and hearing what other people have to say about those things and their human reasons. Their experiences. It's when we stop allowing the conversation to take place we got an issue bigger then the music. Peace to all the peoples. haha

One of the big reasons this record is absolutely amazing is how fantastic the song writing is. Along with the fact that he seemingly knew he was gonna die. For that reason the lyrics are chilling, beautiful, passionate and rewarding. It was getting amazing reception two days before his death, but you can keep complaining and calling it sickening(seriously, what?) all you want: his foreseen demise literally makes this record all the more beautiful. There's a big difference between glorifying his death like people did with Prince, and making his death meaningful. That's what this record did, for me at least. It's a visionary masterpiece.

I think this record receiving universal acclaim is the reason it has more ratings than the records he released during the prior few decades. Everyone was hyped that he had finally released another masterpiece of an album. Add the fact that he died right after releasing his finest record in 20 something years and of course tons of people are going to listen to it.

Heathen was great (and slightly better than The Next Day, IMO) but Blackstar is the best thing he's done since Scary Monsters. That's not to say he hasn't released other enjoyable records in that time, but this was the first in a long ass time to be of such a high caliber.
