I dunno that assumption seems a bit rash. Slipknot have shown before they can offer something very different than just thrash copycat songs and it's not even about faster, heavier etc.. Good example is Prelude 3.0 and just how creepy it is, which is exactly when slipknot are at their strongest.
But it feels like they've forgotten it and spent too much time on fucking tumblr

Prelude 3.0 is unbelievable along with pretty much the rest of the album. They're no longer creepy like they used to be, it just feels cheap. The only exception to that is Killpop for me, which is still my favourite song from this.
