This isn't incredible by any stretch of the imagination, but it's still an excellent album for what it is. But it is their least enjoyable by far.

this is a very solid 3.5. if everything were up to the standard of the first half it would be an easy 4

Only track that isn't up to par for me is Vales. Plateau is a fantastic closer

I'm starting to think this album's average was another casualty of the Sputnik hivemind. like Crysis reviewed it first and he didn't like it so the average plummeted
I would be quite flattered if my opinion weighed that heavily but there is quite a good chance that many other people found this to be a snooze as well. I thought the album sucked, so I wrote a 2/5 review. That's where it ends. So be it if my opinion doesn't go along with that of other publications.
Even Marrow is significantly better than this.

Crysis sure is smart. I should 2 this without listening to it.

You'd be surprised Kyle. Being how close knit this site is, the idea of "fitting in" can be a lot more important for many than they'd like to think or let on. So when someone who is well regarding as a reviewer (such as a staffer) reviews something it can really influence their mindset going into an album and cause them to see things a lot more positively or negatively than they might have otherwise.
I might be full of shit since I've never taken a psych course in my life but this sounds to likely to not be at least partially true

i wouldn't doubt it if that were true for some but i dont think its the sole cause for the lower average

and a 3.4 is still a decent average anyway

Ocean ilu bro, but this isn't even close to being as good as PF.

Also let's talk about the average rating, which as of right now is a 3.4, because I honestly don't think it's that low. I'm sure most people here (even many who love this record) would say that this album is objectively weaker than their past efforts, so it is fitting then that it would get a lower rating.
The average is far closer to your 4.5 than it is to my 2.

Yeah I'd agree with that for sure.

"Also let's talk about the average rating, which as of right now is a 3.4, because I honestly don't think it's that low."
You would given that you gave this a 2 ; )
"I'm sure most people here (even many who love this record) would say that this album is objectively weaker than their past efforts, so it is fitting then that it would get a lower rating."
Hard to say given that I haven't found too many people that love this album on here. Personally, I'd take it over Marrow easily and over PF by a slight margin.
"The average is far closer to your 4.5 than it is to my 2."
Closer, not "far closer". You're comparing a 40%, a 68% and a 90%. None are really close.

This didn't hit me like e.g The Mantle did, what's so unbelievable about that?
And if you're gonna' go to the psychology route, you also need to take into account the fact that people here have a strong bias towards metal as a whole, and Agalloch itself since they've been doing so well in the past, so people here will seek confirmation for the fact and give it higher ratings than they would, were it not for the band's reputation
