"but the punk style does not suit these guys in any way shape or form."

How did it not "suit" them on their first three?

well, i'm not massive on the di'anno albums for a kick off, and number of the beast isn't all that punky tbh

No Prayer is a cheap imitation of what made the DiAnno albums so good. The DiAnno albums were fun, but you can still take them seriously. I just can't take No Prayer seriously. Dickinson sounds like he's doing a really shitty Brian Johnson from AC/DC impression. Even the DiAnno albums had songs that you could take seriously, like Remember Tomorrow and Phantom Of The Opera. Also the DiAnno albums were musically and instrumentally fresh? The groovy solo on Running Free? The slow bridge on Charlotte the Harlot? Yeah none of those moments are on No Prayer, barring Mother Russia I suppose.

'number of the beast isn't all that punky tbh'

number of the beast is also their most overrated

'I've always avoided anything from Maiden post 80s (bar Book of Souls and Fear of the Dark), but I've recently decided to venture through it all. I'm hoping that my ignorance was a mistake, but judging from No Prayer and Fear of the Dark, it hasn't gone unjustified.'

its a mixed bag but brave new world is one of their best

Phantom of the opera is one of the best and greatest track of all times. And best Maiden.

BTW I would not waste my time listening to any post-Noprayer album. The letdown is big.
