@Mystle unexperienced metalheads won't dig it right away tbh.

yeah album sounds great, but i checked their ratings and they don't really listen to anything that sounds like this – including the appreciation for symbolic and tsop, which sound modernized and slick compared to the low end morrisound production here.

In addition to being more slick and modern, they're a bit more accessible imo which makes them easier to get into.

my experience listening to metal was somewhat inverse to what's being described here and i didn't like those albums or their sound as much (tsop is still my least favorite death record)

That being said, I can see why tsop is your least favorite. Going from dirty to clean sound wise is a different experience than going clean to dirty. That being said, I hate how over polished most rock/metal music is these days.

At this point deaths prog albums are like a starter pack to getting into metal

I don't 100% agree with that since they are accessible by death metal standards, they're not really all that accessible, but if someone does start there and actually like it, that could get them into more proggy, techy stuff faster.

@BigPleb Honestly, if it weren't for these guys, I don't know if I would dig death metal tbh. They were my first extreme metal group outside of thrash.

Most people would probably find something to appreciate in deaths later works than deaths older stuff.
A lot of people think writing good riffs and lyrics about death and zombies as immature, this is what I find during my observations.

Ye strike, this album and Symbolic got me into DM.
Main reason being the vox are actually intelligible and the other stuff I was jamming just didn't click with the gargly vox etc.

Symbolic got me into DM but this album truly sunk it in. Fuckin classic man
I wouldn't be the same without this band. Since I discovered them in here, I technically wouldn't be the same without Sput. Life-changing site literally.

I've noticed that sometimes too, and I find it stupid tbh. Death's first album was history in the making so while it's not mature on paper, the end product is actually atmospheric, dense, and historically significant.

Possessed seven churches got me into death metal
Symbolic just got me into lame prog wank

As far as thrash metal is concerned, that's exactly how I feel about Bonded By Blood which is unpolished production built on good riffs and lyrics about violence and satanic worship. On paper, it sounds stupid, but the end product is something revolutionary (for its time at least).
|
| |
I still think 80s metal is revolutionary, pushed boundaries and a lot higher quality than what we have now

I feel 80's metal has a certain charisma which was never achieved since. These days, while there are good riffs to be found, you'll never find another riff like "Bonded By Blood" or "Piranha" again. Just two examples from the same album alone.
