It just seems so nonsensical. I can understand the need to be part of a community - and many christian sects are inclusive - but I'll never understand how anyone can claim it to be the Truth.



If anything, christianity accepts and enforces nihilism because it makes you say goodbye to all standards, even the christian ones. It becomes a metaphysical juggling act where the juggler constantly drops the balls.

Eg you're really splitting hairs there to make that nihilism argument, I think that's a stretch. I used look down my nose at every Christian and automatically dismissed them as willfully stupid but now that I know intelligent Christians actually exist, I can see why people turn to it. Life is fucked up and people need a foundation to exist on. For most people that foundation is built on quicksand, but since God can't be disproven, Christians can actually lead pretty balanced, fulfilling lives by deluding themselves into their beliefs.

As for finding the truth inside, what truth have you found Thrust? You're a very well read guy in philosophy, you're not religious, yet weren't you borderline suicidal only recently? People are fundamentally broken, and if you look too closely inward for meaning I think most will find despair. Look at how many successful artists kill themselves. Not saying they should have been Christian, just that it would have helped and that the belief system has merit as far as application in the real world.

I get why people seek meaning, but I don't get how allegedly intelligent people choose a faith which is so compromised. The people are not always stupid of course, but the metaphysics certainly are.

People turn to religion for many reasons, but one of the most common ones is that in a psychological sense the idea of having ultimate control over your own morals and destiny is for many a frightening prospect. Now no one really has control over these factors, society dictates what morals and ethics you should have, for better and worse (and these are mainly put forth in society by those who already hold power), and destiny is shaped by so many things - ability, background etc. and enforced by those whose destiny is to succeed. What those who hold power do though is create the idea that you can determine your own destiny, that free will actually exists, aand for some people that idea is hard to adjust to. Therefore turning to a deity who supposedly has a divine plan for you is comforting and takes some of the responsibility off your back.
