It sounded really sterile in 1995

What helped it was seeing them support the album at festivals aged 16, a lot of the songs are quality played live

Digging The Grave I’d imagine might about cut the mustard.

This is second best FNM though. Just barely worse than Angel Dust

I know the truth!! Taking the whole discog into account, FNM is outclassed by a few other Patton projects, but this and Angel Dust are where it’s at. The Real Thing also rules to a slightly lesser extent.

Bungle are bad news

You need to dilute one part Patton to four parts ‘actual rock band you’d want to listen to’

That’s the genius of FNM

I think you are severely underestimating the creative input of Dunn and McKinnon in Mr. Bungle's music

And Spruance. His whole career is arguably more consistent than Patton's.

when I bought this CD in 2002, I didn't like it at all outside of Evidence and the title track. I had been obsessed with The Real Thing and Angel Dust for years (back then couldn't just binge a discog as I was a high schooler and only got my music from buying CDs with my meager part-time paychecks). I got Album of the Year a few weeks later and liked it a lot more than this one.

Over the ensuing decade plus, I came to love the shit out of this one. It's their 3rd best, and just as weird as Angel Dust. Difference being that Angel Dust managed to fit the weird equally into each song, and had better hooks/atmosphere, this one was just a straight schizo experience from song to song, and the raw production threw me for a loop. Total grower and a more than worthy entry into the catalog of one of the absolute best bands of the last 35 years.

Evidence, King for a Day, Cuckoo for Caca, Ugly in the Morning, Digging the Grave and The Gentle Art of Making Enemies are some of their best songs.

Your analysis is completely correct. This also feels more ambitious than Angel Dust.
