Agreed 100%, and that's a great point about Discipline. A lot of classic post-hardcore also embodies that spirit of fusing punk with progressive influences, while maintaining an explicit political narrative. It's really a shame that prog and punk have both largely become synonymous with masterbatory noodling and short angsty three-chord tracks.

This seems wildly political compared to the stuff we get today.

I suppose we have realized that it's too late to save humanity, so now it's mostly escapism and nostalgia.

There is plenty of political music just maybe not from like the massive mainstream artists

I know there's lot of political rap and much metal is about environmentalism, but over in rock I'm gonna need you to name some albums.

‘escapism and nostalgia’ is the real opiate of the masses

Wasn’t to Pimp a Butterfly incredibly political and mainstream?

That's why I mentioned political rap, but I admit it was a later post.

I don't like lyrics like Pink Floyd's (or, say, Radiohead's--they strike me as similar bands in ways that aren't purely instrumental...) but that might be a subconscious gesture of self-disavowal or something.

almost feel like backpacker hip-hop has taken up the mantle (see idk dalek or something) of labored anti-establishment/"the man" sentiment which I think has aged badly in my heart of hearts, in favor of the mixture of personal-n-political in modern hip-hop and r&b and stuff, though I wouldn't want to expand the domain of "the political" so much as to throw like all of it in there (a lot of popular stuff makes no allowances for that approach). but the fritzing of those boundaries has been salutary I think

this album hits tho

I'm unclear on what exactly you mean to say here but I kind of don't agree at all that Floyd and Radiohead have anything substantial in common lyrically (or even instrumentally tbh)

Both bands can be *spacey*

and despite only having 2 top 40 US hits, are very popular for their full albums
