so much bm has come out since this that really renders it average for me. although it has pretty moments sprinkled here and there, it really lacks a structure that is a dynamic space working in any kind of interesting way

New album is out on npr apparently. Shame it has to happen while I’m at work, but I shall get around to it. Just throwing the word out

Only find myself returning to the bookends from this nowadays, but it's obviously an excellent record. New Bermuda was kinda w.e, not super excited for the new one tbh

Pecan Tree for best song. Can’t wait to jam the new one.

Every non-filler song on this blows my mind, it's impossible to talk about just one track when they're all so solid.

the title track stood out as being my favorite at least

I never thought I'd see "Digging: Deafheaven - Sunbather" under a Boney comment, reminds me I haven't listened to this in way too long myself

Come on Dyl, give me a bit more credit than that - not gonna get into how "metal" or not this is but no matter what it's a gorgeous triumph of atmospheric rock music and if that's not right up my alley I don't know what is.

I'm just genuinely surprised you dig this so much, like even after I saw you getting into Kodama I still didn't envision this as your kind of thing. I guess I thought the vocals on here might be a turn-off for you

Fair, fair, but indeed as you point out I've gradually been enjoying more and more things with harsh vocals which probably helped ease me into this better than if I had tried listening to it two or three years ago.

I'm continually interested to hear non-metal listener's, or relatively new metal listener's like Boney, reactions to this. It's a really fascinating and innovative approach at something new: take the ferocity and energy of bm but have songwriting and melodic elements be more like the genres shoegazing, dream pop, post-rock, screamo, etc. They weren't the first band to do something like that, but they were the first to do it their way, which has caused such a stir with how much attention and controversy they've had, which is significant.
This is majorly designed, whether intentional or not, to rock the boat of what black metal can be. That's how I process it in my brain at least.
I don't really consider this or their new one black metal though, aside from the drumming and the vocals. The demo, RtJ, and New Bermuda moreso, but still not really, despite how it might sound on the surface. Black metal has too many distinctive elements and traits that this doesn't fit. Not trying to start another debate about this tho, just posting my thoughts.

it's one of those no-it-isn't-but-yeah-it-is kinda things.

True, and the use of tremolo picked guitars is rampant in black metal obviously, but also in post-rock, and how they're used in different contexts is really blurred on here in a pretty brilliant way.

I don't really listen to metal but enjoy this because they seem to have good melodic sensibility. Personally I don't find the black metal elements (the screaming in particular) to add much of anything, except maybe the drumming. The highlight of the album for me is the end of dream house + irresistible if that tells you anything. I most enjoy the post rock elements and see this album as heavy post rock with slightly irritating screaming, though I don't think I would prefer if it was purely instrumental, maybe just a different vocal tone

Cant stand bm but never really considered this bm. I only got into this because theyre from my city even had the chance to meet them several times. I love skramz and prog/ prog metal and feel like this album combines those elements well so it was an easy transition. Shane the guy who has the black metal now in color soundoff a guy ive met and seen a show with put it the best with that quote... it really is a gentle intro to bm
