I've never understood the immense hype for this record. The first song is the best one and it's all downhill from there. King Kunta is one of the most basic songs Kendrick has written, too. Lots of jazzy experimental stuff going on which I guess I just never latched onto.
GKMC is a hard 5 though, that album changed my perception of so many things.

GKMC has even more generic radio boppers tho
This one has the whole concept thing tying it together, tons of instruments, incredible production, lyricism that blows my mind on the daily...idk just seems like something you'd have a lot of respect for.

those things might all be an asset if I enjoyed the music itself, but nothing grabs me and I've listened to this at least 10 times
I do respect it, I suppose it has cultural significance and albums don't just end up with a 4.4 site avg by accident, but for me GKMC is far superior from a songwriting, hook, and even lyrical perspective. It also has quite a good concept of its own and definitely tells a story.

"GKMC has even more generic radio boppers tho"
imagine how much 6 years did to have this dude call the tunes 'generic'. I mean you're not wrong but kinda took me aback there.

i guess i dont understand your first comment?
and they're not necessarily "generic", but GKMC is the radio album between the two. it's more accessible, it's got the catchy beats and melodies, etc. Aside from a couple songs, TPAB aint the type of album to get radio play

idk man we're not listening to same radio then. more than half of this saw radio play for plenty of time let it be by some weeks or many months to the point of being used in other media. like bro how could you say that and have this at a 5 not knowing that?

1. I don't actually listen to the radio. I only hear the radio when I'm out and about, and I think I've heard King Kunta once. That's it.
2. When I say radio, I'm thinking local stations that play pop/rap. Kendrick would be a rarity on any of those stations. If we branch out to Sirius XM and all that, then yeah I'm sure you could have found plenty of this album.

also I'm just eyeing the tracklist again and I'm seeing at least 10 tracks that definitely don't get air-time on any kind of radio station I've ever heard of

momma, hood politics, mortal man, institutionalized, u
even wesley's theory would be kinda jarring to hear on the radio. like really cool, but totally unexpected. especially with that intro

I heard momma, institutionalized, and mortal man around on the radio. granted not on 'traditional' pop hip hop stations but on stations that are just as legitimate as sirius since lots of people rather pay for spotify. wesley's I def heard around on funk and leftfield hip hop stations, the intro gets edited away obviously.

yeah, I guess when I say "the radio" I'm referring to an actual radio that you flip on and search for stations. Or a car radio. In other words, the traditional stations.

Whenever I read “radio” I think like the most wide ranging lowest common denominator-seeking stations possible....
And in that regard, gkmc is easily the more “radio” or the two. It had BDKMV, Backseat Freestyle, Poetic Justice, Money Trees, Maad City, and fucking Swimming Pools... the only tracks on here that even compete with those popularity wise is Kunta and Alright
I’d even go as far as to say gkmc is closer to DAMN. than it is to this album in terms of the popularity and wide spread appeal of the individual tracks
