Idk for a long time now I've felt disconnected with Kendrick. Like I've over time since like spring 2017 started disliking him more and more because everyone says how great he is and idk it annoyed me and ruined his music for me. I guess I love this album again though?? You asked what singles sound like Alright and that was always a banger no matter how I felt but I was like "I'm gonna listen to that song and then comment back" but i just kept going through the album and it just brought back memories and for once since 2017 I was just listening and enjoying, not thinking of stupid things like other people and I realized how good it is.

Kendrick is a slippery slope for sure dude. Like I won't lie, he might be overrated in some ways, and he may have some dumb fans (lol me probably) , but he's really a special talent in today's hip hop at the same damn time. I recently accepted that DAMN wasn't even as good as Section 80, mainly cause of some of those lame pop cuts like that song with Rihanna and the song Love. And because he kinda lost me with the, imo, more poorly articulated religious themes.
I think he's slipping a bit right now. He'll turn out a fire feature/collab every now again, but a lot of those Black Panther songs I straight up didn't like. lol Like that track with SZA was just for the sake of both of their names on a song imo. Snoozefest. But yeah, I don't think he has shit to prove at this point either. Super impressed that a conscious album that sounds like this got to go platinum in the 2010's. That's a FEAT.

It sure is. The album as a whole is a decent step down from this tho imo.

I really understand not liking an album, artist, video game, writer, etc. because of the fanbase. It's hard because you know deep down its just a stupid bias that has nothing to do with the actual product itself, but it's still practically impossible to avoid. The best thing to do imo is just try to be aware where those kind of biases may come into play.
also I've come to a point where I can't pick my favorite between Damn, TPAB, GKMC, or even Section 80. They all have identifiable strengths and weaknesses. I actually like the pop/songwriter approach to Damn.

I agree with the guy who says DAMN pushes itâs religious angle too hard. I really hope kendrick doesnât truly believe some of the shit said on that album like âblacks, Hispanics and native Americans are the true Israelites as according to the Bible,â cuz thatâs some dumb shit. If he continues from that angle itâll start making it really hard to respect kennyâs words. Hope he leaves that behind him.

What I really hated was the sentiment that black people suffer because they've "strayed from God". Lol As if he wasn't just talking about the REAL systemic issues an album ago, on TPaB.

Yeah thatâs a questionable sentiment as well. Something tells me that part of it is just to fit in with the âparanoidâ theme that the album has going for it, especially in the track FEAR. But subsequent albums will tell whether thatâs a philosophy he actually follows or not.

The "we are suffering because of our relationships with each other" message of TPAB is a lot more human, relatable, and empathetic than the "we are suffering because of our relationship with god" message of DAMN.
