yeah I got the sense from Matt's statement that it was a sequel only thematically, which doesn't really come as a surprise because he's been writing about the government lying to us for fucking aeons now
still, gonna jam, actually have decent hopes after hearing the Handler

Ehhh new album is solid but kind of a let down. Aftermath and Revolt are pretty bad, The Globalist is ok until the heavy part then you're like holy shit m/// then it's just blah. Title track has gorgeous harmonies but that's literally it. First half overall is stronger definitely

I like the Floyd-esque beginning to Aftermath but after a few minutes the track is just meh.

definitely best Muse in a number of years and their best outside their trio of home runs
only two godawful songs as compared to like four on 2Law and Resistance, everything else from at least good to actually really great, title track is their most creative and interesting work in years. Also at points features their first use of actual subtlety (for Muse? I know right!) since, well, basically Soldier's Poem

Yeah I'd agree. It's definitely a good album, just not the home run I wanted.

Dead Inside is the best of the bunch imo.

dead inside is a much better version of undisclosed desires and it actually feels like a muse song in parts cause of matt's melodies and the bridge section which rules
by far their best electronic song imo (not counting MotP ofc)

Dead Inside is pretty great. The album itself would be pretty great if they didn't kinda drop the ball completely in the second half

I can already tell Drones is going to be their best album since BHAR

Yeah, first half has grown on me and is really solid but after The Handler (which is easily their best song since BH&R) the ball drops. Defector is awful and Revolt is pretty poor as well. Aftermath and The Globalist are decent but The Globalist resembles Unnatural Selection way to much and gets really large queen vibes towards the end. Aftermath just doesn't sound like a muse song and the title track is bad as well. I feel the major problem with the second half is that it embodies the root of all that was wrong with Muse for the past two albums, they overblew it and they show their influences way too much: Defector literally sounds like they're trying to be queen and AC/DC. The first half while flawed at least got back in touch with Muse's identity and they felt like themselves for the first time in years but that goes away in the second half.

The Handler is one of their best songs agreed

I read that is was also Dom and Chris's (drum and bass player for those who don't know) favorite song on the album while The Globalist was Matt's which I guess is another example of why Muse has seemingly fallen off. Matt, the lead songwriter, is more interested in making more complicated and grander compositions rather than ones that actually have substance.
