More than anything I'm surprised that the prevailing narrative about this band is that they're progressive and uplifting their communities and whatever. Since social justice politics are all the rage at Pitchfork, Stereogum and other outlets, why didn't they bring up "Georgie Porgie" at all when they put out that comeback album?
I understand that people are capable of change, but this group wrote an entire song just to bully their former friend for being gay. This goes beyond the casual homophobia of the 90's, it's cruel and potent hatred. And it defines their legacy for me. Fuck these guys.

@luci I agree with most of what you are saying. And I respect your feelings about it. On one hand I think its irresponsible for those outlets to over-emphasize the good without shedding light on the bad. But on the other hand, the history of homophobia in ethnic minority communities - particularly poor African American communities - is a great big can of worms. The progressive politics of empowerment and the regressive deeply rooted homophobia in hip hop certainly don’t coexist nicely in retrospect. But there’s a lot more complexity to that than if it was a privileged white group, in which case I would be less willing to offer room for forgiveness and atonement. For me it doesn’t define their legacy, but it does sully it for sure.

What really irks me is that the new generation of hip hop is STILL widely homophobic. Even when most of the old heads have the sense to have long stopped dropping slurs (except Eminem who can go die)

now more than ever has the moral panic towards hip-hop had any actual depth to it. shits as violent, drug obsessed, homophobic and misogynist as ever. although its a complicated topic that im far from read up on or have anything enlightening to say. especially considering i dont listen to much hip hop (listened to a bahamadia lp today and its the first hip hop lp ive heard for years probably)

It has some great songs but nah it has some filler and a couple downright awful tracks.
Gonna relisten to Marauder’s tn, I barely remember it but I know it’s good
