Fantano called it "Metal for Disney Adults" and now I've changed my opinion of the man.

"Sleep Token is just Lewis Capaldi for people with Nightmare Before Christmas tattoos"
the comments are pretty good, I'm with My People.

The description of "I listen to everything but rap and country" is also absurdly accurate for the folks who enjoy this lmao

The Spectrum Pulse "review" for this is incredible, some of the most insightful music criticism I've seen in a minute

That was pretty much exactly what I said yesterday, even down to the nu-metal comparison.

The circular bi-yearly discourse around Melon Man is always really funny to me since every so often he touches a nerve by shitting on a band people like and then everyone gets all sanctimonious about review culture and how he's just a hater or whatever.
He hates a ton of bands I like but I can't imagine taking him or any other reviewer seriously enough to give a shit when he doesn't like something that I do.

I saw that video Odal, that dude should have way more subscribers than he has

Wonderful video rec, Odal, I agree with pretty much everything Spectrum Pulse said, and I honestly think it clarified for me some of the reasons why this album didn't stick compared to TMBTE

Spectrum is a cool guy. I prob disagree with him more than Fantano but his taste is more consistent and makes more sense to me.

Discourse around this band is interesting because it raises the question, is there such a thing as a fundamentally bad concept in music? It seems like the hate for them is mostly just objecting to the entire idea of mixing djent with pop, more than the execution (eg, "metal for Disney people").
I actually don't love this band but I understand why they are popular. If you're into this idea then it seems well-executed enough. Aesthetics are cool. I don't mind seeing a metal band go this direction.

idk Bro-Country's up there. ANYTHING related to NSBM/RAC/Nazi music too.

Bro-country and trap country agreed. The mainstream dilution of electronic music into "EDM" is also one of the biggest offenders even if there can be some cool stuff 5% of the time (I know this is an old head gatekeeper take but its true)

I disagree with this; I have the opposite take on Sleep Token. I think that the concept of blending the genres together is cool, but I think Sleep Token executes their attempt at it poorly (particularly with their more recent material). An attempt at pushing boundaries and redefining genres is welcomed, but it needs to be done *well* and these guys aren't doing it all that well.

Agreed. Genre blending dont mean shit if the songs don't come together well
