“ This site is just as pretentiously awful as Pitchfork. Two sides of the same coin at this point.”
It ain’t a coin, it’s a die. It’s easy to label the site as a whole, but all places are like this because a lot of people are like this and the way a lot of people assume and respond also makes it look like this. Is discourse really all that different on Reddit, metal archives, Instagram, 4chan, YouTube, etc.? Hell no. It’s all the same shit. It’s a people thing regardless of whether you approve of it or not; you contribute just the same, like it or not; you aren’t all that different, see it or not.

Demons thought about an awards for this dumpster fire of a thread is quite amusing. Good idea tbh maybe something could come from this
Like MoM said its a people thing not a thing relegated to one spot. This album/band is always going to be a contentious subject as long as it has the insane hype train it has behind it.

I honestly prefer it to people throwing around the word ‘objectivity’

Sput has always come across as skeptical to me, not pretentious. Which isn't to say there isn't ANY pretentiousness, as every music community is likely guilty of that to an extent, but the general attitude here towards certain artists/releases/etc. that rise to prominence is like, a questioning sort of thing? Like when the Windmill Scene started to gain traction here. Some bands didn't pass this scrutiny test (i.e. black midi), others (BC,NR) thrived.

Old sput hit different when toothless pop metal got discussed
Nah but you’re right, these albums like this with huge crossover appeal get analyzed by the diehard fans of the genres they’re plucking things from and most of the time those fans hate the watered down version of the stuff they like. I don’t feel like that’s pretentious, so much as just… being well versed in the origins of genres and shit. Not to say some of these poppy metalcore and hardcore acts aren’t just good clean fun… it’s generally when they try to appear all moody and deep and/or scary and intimidating that they get absolutely shredded

"heard this band's being championed a lot by nik nocturnal and hes got like the worst taste in all youtube and the metal community"
bruh i caught this video where he was guessing metal hammer's "big 4 of every metal genre" or something, and then scrolling down to see what metal hammer actually put, and i was just dumbfounded how someone whose livelihood is so dependent on the genre knows so little about it.
for "old school / 90s metalcore" he guessed killswitch and norma jean, and then lost his shit when neither were there and dillinger was, among a bunch of other just completely head scratching guesses and reactions. even his twitch chat was dunking on him.

If this album was all shrieking, dissonant noise, no sense of coherent structure to speak of, every song bloated 10 mins it would be the highest rated album on the site
