Yeah lol I don't like this specific album or band so I must hate the whole genre.

I obviously agree with qwenta. My tendency to harp on albums like this stems more from how high the overall average is. I'd normally just write something like this off as not very good and forget about it a couple days later, but it's getting so many aoty nods from people I've gotten solid recs from, which leaves me scratching my head. I think the two things really holding me back from enioying any of this are the cleans and the lyrics. The lyrics in particular are awful, and I think the sane argument could be made for some of Converge's lyrics but then even if they are bad they're pretty obfuscated

^If I may be blunt, you've judged it by your high standards. Perhaps what you are looking for is a flattering remark: you have higher tastes and standards. And to put it more bluntly, Counterparts are one of those bands that are very mainstream and can even be described as poppy due to its melodic nature. This makes them an easy target for attack.

yes the lyrics are the worst thing about this style of metalcore
very melodramatic

If your motivation is just the music itself, the presence or absence of hype should have no effect at all, shouldn't it? I can't actually tell if it's the hype or the record that you're pressing. They have very different motives

Yeah I can't find any redeemable lyrics on the entire thing. They just come across as edgy and lame. Like that one line "I watch the coffins close wishing one were mine" gives a vibe of ooh ur pain is so deep, bro. Gah, I'm just not into that kind of writing and even some of my favourite bands are guilty of writing this kind of shit at times that makes me cringe but it's all over this record.
And nah man I'm not trying to sound elitist or like I listen to a higher caliber of music, I do love artists in the metalcore genre, and I even conceded Converge lyrics sometimes border on being cheesy and too overdramatic, but even then I feel like they've written some really great lines. If it weren't for the cleans I'd probably consider a 2.5 or borderline 3 for this. There's a couple moments I liked

yeah converge have melodramatic lines all over their discog, but theyre unintelligible so it doesnt have that immediate cringe reaction
plus they tend to have less weight behind them. theres a tendency with this style of metalcore to have big moments where a particular line stands alone and the crowd shouts along.

"It’s pretty uncontroversial to acknowledge that expectations/preconceptions someone has of a thing can affect their enjoyment of that thing, no? "
Not if you're absolutely confident and completely true to yourself. (Not describing you, just a very general case)
edit: also concentration

Well, yes and no. Hype obviously affects everyone to some degree, and when an album is getting tons of aoty accolades and you hear it and it's just the most w/e thing to you, surely you feel an even greater disconnect because its status as being amazing makes no sense to you.

'Converge's lyrics are masterful IMO, esp. on Jane Doe (that song, but also the entire album)'
oh yeah i love the vast majority of converges lyrics, but they deffo have a few lines that dont sit well with me

Even when Converge are writing some questionably melodramatic lyrics, I still feel like there are some interesting themes to engage with there, like "I know the tears they're weeping and the damage they will take/ It's the curse of restlessness and the weight of your mistakes" might seem somewhat similar to this on a surface level but the writing is noticeably upgraded

alright, I get it, you want to be connected. this makes perfect sense. thanks for saying it.
I think the lyrics do suck. But there won't really be many fans who care about them, as long as the punchline is catchy enough. That's a pretty low bar.

'yeah converge have melodramatic lines all over their discog, but theyre unintelligible so it doesnt have that immediate cringe reaction'
lol, so true - defo love 'em regardless though
And yeah, interesting(?) to hear Misery Signals mentioned as a point of comparison, because I don't get that band either - must just not be my particular tipple
I did not expect people (well, Gyro at least) to be checking Coalesce as a by-product of this thread, but either way it is a beautiful thing. I would say they're a potentially tough nut to crack as I wasn't head-over-heels for them at first, so give it time.

"plenty of people in the world who will want to take your position bro. In my eyes, family will always be a sweet burden. What is not hard work is usually of little value."
nah, I didn't mean I'm unhappy with the way things are. I'm actually really happy to be a dad and husband and it's way more fun than I would have thought a few years ago.
But sometimes I'm a little melancholic because I know I'll probably never lie on my floor listening to an album on repeat for hours or work night shifts at company X and then, in the early morning hours when I walk home, listen to an album that perfectly fits the mood.
I guess in those moments I didn't realize that these are passing moments in life, and not something that will be there forever. Looking back I just wish I would have recognized that sooner. But I guess I shouldn't dwell to much on the past, otherwise future me will think I should have focused more on the 'now' as well :p

I know I am on it and they have a mathcore character and a more experimental nature. I find it quite approachable and not as hard to chew as you say.
