Hehe yeah I'm a bit of a cynic alright. Let me clarify my stance a bit though. Here we have one of the very best brutal/dissonant bands ever. I get that they had to become a bit more mellow and atmospheric at some point (you can't channel this amount of rage and furious intensity into your 50s I guess), but they could've created a genuily creepy or bleak sound instead of this. I feel they lost both their fury and their bleakness. I would've had a similar reaction if their sound had moved into Dream Theatre territory or something. But yeah if you like that sound, you like that sound, ain't nothing wrong with that...

"I feel they lost both their fury AND their bleakness, which is almost a travesty under the Converge name at this point."
Converge is my favourite band but they already started incorporating a lot of these elements from as far back as Axe to Fall. I mean, I get what you're saying cos AtF is still heavy as fuck but I mean something like Dark Horse was already pretty cheesy (read: fun) in its own way. I dunno, I just don't see this as all that far removed from their most recent output. I've enjoyed it but I don't think they'll ever release something I love as much as their Jane Doe to AWLWLB period again and that's fine, they still rule and they're still putting out really solid and innovative material considering they've been a band for 30+ years.

Not too sure about AtF there, but yeah there were definitely signs of things to come since AWLWLB, which I always found didn't suit them too well (for me AtF is a rare 5, while AWLWLB and TDIU are 3.5s). I didn't care for the more emo stuff on these last albums (the two opening tracks come to mind) and most if not all of the slower stuff. I feel bands like Zeni Geva and Brutal Truth have done the slower sludgy stuff much better.

'Converge is my favourite band but they already started incorporating a lot of these elements from as far back as Axe to Fall.' (2)
some ppl be acting like they couldn't see this coming, expectations can be a bitch
'It was tongue in cheek, of course I don't think they're lying, just that they like Converge so much that they convince themselves that it's good out of loyalty. We've all done it to an extent. But of course I'm aware that some people genuinely like this.'
yeah I'm sure this does happen, but equally I could say some other people are hating on this because they love what Converge WAS and are struggling to accept this stage of their development. They just want the old 'verge back. It can work both ways.
Just thought I'd join you in throwing some baseless assumptions out there.

Still yet have to listen to this, but the first two tracks I listened to gave me similar vibes to that experimental Acacia Strain album It Comes In Waves. Funny though how that one was that band's greatest artistic achievement while this here is bread and butter for Converge really

I like this quite a bit, don't know if I'd rate it above Dusk In Us but it's pretty solid. Haven't heard anything from Chelsea before this too. Lord of Liars was giving me heavy Oathbreaker Rheia vibes on her vox for some reason and that makes it the best song here; I just adore that melody and the dissonance during the chorus.
Definitely understand why some people aren't digging this tho, some moments in these tracks like Failure Forever's chorus felt a bit boring. I think if we got some more balls to the wall style verge with Chelsea and Brodsky contrasting their vox and influence against the chaos then I'd be even more in love with this project. The aggressive shit is certainly my favorite aspect of this, and I say that as someone who'd tell you Eve is Converge's best song hands down.

They decided to go in a different direction, that's where the fuck it is. Don't worry, they're still doing their usual schtick as well, so all's good. I think you should embrace it.
