I had another listen to this today and there was some improvement for me. I’m maybe just not used to opeth being so theatrical / showy with their music so that takes some getting used to. But I’m going to try and get into this some more.

I also had a retread of pale communion but my lord is that album an utter mess of unrealised ideas.

Since when have Opeth not been theatrical?

I guess you could make a case for Serenity Painted Death being as theatrical as death metal can be. With that riff and vocal delivery.

It's been always in their blood yeah. Mikael loves ABBA so this was unavoidable.

Can you please stop reminding me about that? - I know it's (probably) not intentional, if it is, well yeah, just stop.

Hahahahahaha! Not 100% intentional. Ok this was the last time I swear.

Banemannen/The Garroter is cool for its jazzines of course, but I think this overshadows how totally amazing that first minute is, with the acoustic guitar playing. That's what I mean when I say this album is colourful.

I just get 'what haven't we tried'-vibes from that.

"Ooh drum echo, I remember when that was a thing."

He's gonna pull out the keytar next.

Haven't listened to this yet, but I would just say that people saying new Opeth is copying King Crimson aren't being very accurate. There's a little KC here and there but the clearest 1970s prog influence on Opeth is Camel. Ending Credits on Damnation sounds just like them.

I'm very much in the group that thinks Damnation is far better than any of their 2010s albums, though I don't dislike the 2010s albums as much as I just don't think about them much. Based on comments here I'll probably listen to the Swedish version of this for the best experience.

People mostly just compare Opeth to 70s prog in general like that’s somehow a bad thing, but even then they’ve always kept certain stylistic tendencies they’ve been known for since the 2000s. Opeth has never stopped sounding like Opeth despite their new direction

True, though Damnation sounded very different to their 2010s albums despite its lack of metal elements. There has definitely been a move towards more 1970s-sounding material, just not really copying any specific 1970s band.

There are lots of King Crimson and Camel influence in all their music that got amplified in the 2010s albums. Agreed that they always sound like themselves though despite that, especially in Heritage which people inaccurately say is just a '70s prog ripoff record. If anything PC does more of that.

Anything remotely 70's sounding is a "King Crimson ripoff" according to many Opeth and Steven Wilson listeners.

I find they only sound like themselves some of the time. Other times it's just generic dad rock or 70s prog lite. There are moments on all of the past 3 albums that I love but there's a lot of generic schlock too. The last album I consistently loved by them was Heritage

A lot of people seem to like it so it's worth a listen... I don't find it's significantly better than the two before it, though. I guess it's more consistent, and it has way better production than Sorceress, but it's still just not all that interesting.

Please define “dad rock” and how it applies to Opeth because people love to throw that around as a shallow criticism

And yes they do embrace their influences on the past few albums but imo it’s a better showcase of their abilities and they do it in the context of their own style. They never sound like they’re ripping anyone off to me
