revisited alligator through this the other day and it probably sits behind the albums prior (except maybe twfm which ive never been able to terribly get into). this starts and ends strong but the mid section gets tedious. definitely prefer swb

This album is about to fall out of my rotation as a full album.

Highlights only now. Sad times.

About to give this roughly my 10th spin

Really hoping it cements my initial love rather than continuing to grow off

I thought it was typical to be lukewarm to national albums on release. I'm just a sucker for that soft high violet/trouble sound

This has their classic magic. I feel it

I don't think this feels similar to HV or Trouble at all. It actually barely feels like a National album. The guest appearances are distracting and feel out of place to me.

They've made a pretty significant shift with this. So it's probably going to take twice as long for me to warm up. I'm hardly getting any of that "National vibe" that I've grown to love. At least not on the surface.

Boney: The female vocals in The Pull Of You reminds me of Of Monsters and Men too. Really the only thing that reminds me a lot of these songs are from The National is the drums.

Alright, I’m a National newbie. Don’t think I’ve even heard a song. But they sound up my alley and Sputnik has never steered me wrong with various bands, so I ordered their entire discography on CD (except for the debut for now). Hyped to go through it!

Yeah man, I’ve discovered so many bands here — most I had heard of, but never really listened to. But since September, I’ve gone through the discogs of Thrice, Brand New, Modest Mouse and Manchester Orchestra. It’s been amazing. I’m forever thankful to this site and all the people who discussed these bands on their threads.

This is like the most depressing thread I've ever read.

I'm listening to SWB for the first time in a while, and even tho it's pretty morose and subdued with lots of ballads, it still feels more high energy and engaging than this or even TWFM in a weird way.

You had your soul with you - Weakish opener, pretty generic, almost teenage lyrics. Poor version of secret meeting. 2.5

Quiet Light - This sounds like someone just listing stuff with tv show scene link music in the background. I can relate to some of the lyrics, so I'll let them off some of the clichés. 2.5

Roman Holiday - Knick knack paddywack. More listing stuff. Repetitive. Climax is supposed to be a few strings. Melody is very limited. 2

Oblivions - This song goes nowhere. Du du du du du du du du guitar with no payoff. "Still got my fear" is a weak thing to hang a song on. 2

The pull of you - Melody is da da da daa - da da daa daa. Fast embarrassing talking. Finally a bit of passion, but dull rant. This is like an Arab Strap b-side. 2.5

Hey Rosey - This song is maybe ok. It has a little sweep I guess. But I wouldn't add it to a playlist, still pretty repetitive. 2.5

I am easy to find - "Towers to the skies, an academy of lies". Symptomatic of the decay of their lyrics. This song is musically dull, with little bloops at the end. Doesn't go anywhere. The ticker tape line would be a typical National payoff line but nothing sounds emphasised or contextualised. 1.5

Her father in the pool - Doesn't count

Where is her head - This is ok, shows a little progression and is mildly pleasant to listen to. Arcade Fire lite. 3

Not in Kansas - This is just embarrassing. The verses are lame, I hate the lyrics, and the weird interlude is a mockery of just about any competent performance of a bluegrass / spiritual song. And it's so long. 1

So far so fast - "I list things in an atmospheric settings, then have an a bridge for use in an indie series". The choir doesn't do anything (Traditional band out of ideas = loops, bloops, choirs - the trifecta). Nice Radiohead-esque piano stuff saves it from being a 1. 2

Dust swirls in strange light - Probably the best song on the album. It doesn't sound like a weak retread of past songs. 3

Hairpin turns - The Bono voice comes out. At least it sounds like a song. But I wouldn't listen to it again. 2.5

Rylan - The obligatory chunky rocker on a National album. It's OK. If Sea of Love, Blank Slate, Mistaken for Strangers, etc etc didn't exist I might have listened to this again. 2.5

Underwater - Doesn't count

Light years - Not a bad filler song. Also sounds somewhat retreaded, but at least it's pleasant-ish. However, Lucky you exists. 3
