Ratings are arbitrary, I always rate after a listen or two and then adjust later if I feel so inclined.

Five Cups gives me a strong Water EP by Thrice vibe.

“it actually irks me a little when label things as classic first listen”
Agreed but at the same time 5.0 meaning “classic” is kind of the issue. Just the term classic gives stigma to 5’ing things. Sure it’s all subjective but “classic” has at least some objective weight to it. I always thought 5 should be changed to “perfect” or “masterpiece” anyway, but I digress.

yeah this is my third time really going through it, I can see it growing but finally put a rating down
Shakey Graves newest was a 3 at first but turned to my AOTY so far so...

I feel like most masterpieces take more than one listen to fully hit you, or it’s probs not a masterpiece

I generally don't 5 things until after about a year after release, but with some albums it's a pretty clear 5 and the waiting is just a formality (though I cut the wait short for Go Farther in Lightness).
"perfect" would be an even more problematic descriptor than "classic" IMO, but I agree it should change. Honestly all the descriptors above 2.5 probably need to shift. How 'bout:
3= Decent
3.5 = Good
4 = Great
4.5 = Excellent
5 = Superb or Masterful

it's just semantics tbh, whatever the labels are people will apply their own thought processes to the way they rate albums. you can't convince me anybody here would change the way they rate if the descriptors were changed. individual taste fluctuates and ratings can change, so it's perfectly fine to 5 something on first listen if it's bowled you over, doesn't mean it'll necessarily stay that way forever. and if others want to be cautious that's their prerogative too

I have listened to this at least 20x now and still don't know what to rate it. it's good af for sure, but everything about this record makes me wonder to what degree I actually like this album. a 4.5 seems both too high and too low for some reason.

I kinda get what you mean.

4.5/5 seems too high, but a 4.5/10 seems too low. I get it.

My ratings usually come after like 4 or 5 listens but I will give an album lotsss of listens and change if I decide against my original rating

Think I’ve probably listened to this between 25-35 times since release, maybe more, and I’m pretty comfortable with my rating.
Think I’d likely place it around a 4.2 or 4.3 if I could drill it down further though.

About 12 times for me from front to back. I'm still wavering between a 4.5 and a 4. Only time will tell how it holds up I suppose.
