A lot of genres have a "big 4" I think just because it's the 4 bands most associated with a genre

i dont care about 'instrumental tightness' or cornell's caterwauling dawg, we're looking for different things in our music

I guess so, but if you're looking for raw emotion you should prefer Alice in Chains to Nirvana even

'Big four' pfft talk about a construed opinion made by people who didn't live it and if they did they were probabaly 'moshing' to Gigilo Aunts.

Seeing as grunge basically wouldn't have existed without the Melvins, I'd say that they count.

Corgan has stated on numerous occasions that the Pumpkins are not a grunge band and I'm inclined to believe him.

No band ever said that they were a grunge band. It didn't happen. It was a tag. Until Bush, Creed and that sort.

I thought Mark Arm invented the term in 85 when he described his band Green River as grunge in some letter

I like In Utero the most because it's more raw and more of a straight forward delivery. While Nevermind had what seemed like a sort of formula. I feel like shit for using that word lol.
